C, THURSDAY -TANUABY 5 1922 AMERICANS WITH $10,000 INCOMES SHOULD GIVE TIME TO HOBBIES PHILADELPHIA, Janusry 5.— John Cowper Powys, British poet, advocated here that every Amer- fcan business man of this country, who had an income of $10,000 a year should be forced by law to retire at the age of fifty and pursue a hobby. Mr. Powys spoke at the Philadelphia forum. “Americans are not pleasure loving,” he said. “Every man works and I have found only two men in this country who had really lived and had never worked. It was like finding primsoses on the Atlantic ocean. “The Americans are not dollar- loving, as has often been said. You are generous, far more so than bas been said. We in England are always looking forward to the day when We can retire and live in pleasure.. There is no such air in America. It would be a good thing it every man who has an income of $10,000 a year should be forced to retire at the age of fifty. He should then pursue & hobby, and there would be more attracted to art and literature. —_— FIAT PLANT DAMAGED. SPERLING, ;2= 1336 F St. N.W., Mrs. Tyler, in a written communica- tion addressed to members of the or- ! der, stated the resignation was to take efféct immediately and that it was due to the illness of her daughter, Mrs. Doris Manning Jett, who is suffering from tuberculosis. “My_physician, Dr. Henry McGhee, says I must rest or completely col- lapse,” the letter sald. In’ the announcement Mrs. Tyler praised the work of the klan, referred to her promise to ‘“stand by the guns until the enemy has been vanquished,” but explained that the illness of Mrs. Jett, which, she said, promises to be fatal, made the resignation necessary. Mr. Clark, in reply to questions, said he would have to accept Mrs. Tyler's resignation, and that he would not ap- point a successor, but would take over full charge of the work of the propa- ganda department.
