T e v FIN RESULTS OF YEAR INBUSINESS WAY Improvement Dates From " Mid-June—Position of Utili- ty Securities Better. BY L A. FLEMING. The year ending today has been marked by a slow, but more or lesi general recovery in American busi- ness. More especially have the last six months witnessed an improve- ment. The depth of the depression was ed about mid-June, at a time Steel common shares dropped with the entire Wall street list of American and foreign securi- ties grinding on low, with the excep- tion of some securi s of companies that had passed through the depres- m field and were on the upgrade, like the Woolen, Leather and a few other specialti d-paying b nds were also strong- er all year, the great ease of money ‘withdrawn from its usual employ- ment in business channels, because of the restricted activity therein pro- ducing an excellent and gradually im- proving investment market. while it also caused wu gradual reduction in the interest rate that the federal gov- ernment was called upon to pay for its temporary financing. The yearly clearings naturally will show a great falling off from the large total for 1920, for the first half of 1920 marked the greatest activity ling the smashing declines. 1y’ Washington clearings also follow the same line. but there has been a great improvement here in the past few months. in common with the betterment elsewhere, and espe- cially in our retail trade, the distri bution of much money on investments, savings. ete., making for a decided im- provement. Money has heen plentiful in the Dis trict during the entire year with rates varying between 6 and’s per cent. Utilities Are Better. The greatest ve improvement locally has been in public at about top and bonds of . where a year favor or at least zh regard. teholders of the Wash- Company been able ‘ during utilities. P'rice | market on the the utility companie ago they were in d ot held in very h Had the n Ington Utiliti to dispose of their 27,500 shares of Railway common back of their dis honored notes. at 37 a share, today’s price, they would probably have wel- comed the sale. As it is, the banks -mow holding the stock are usually - & the notes on their books at a price under their value today, value base the collateral. rise in the value of local se- curities has amounted to many mil- lions of dollars during the vear and is a subject of general congratulation among the investors of Washington, who are thus enabled to recoup much of their I elsewhere. The banks of Washington have had the best year since the war, more em- ployment for money. even temporary in- vestments for funds on deposit for a &hort period being available at 5 to 6 per cent during tie greater part of the year. Retailers of Washington. after many months of only fair trade, closed the Year in a great rush of business, with prospects good for a continued readjust- ment and improvement through 1922, Raliroads Plight. The railroads of the country have through readjustment of wages made some improvement, but here and with the agricultural community there is much improvement needed that may be slow in coming. If one could take the reports of the railroads of the country and accept the wonderful increases in net, while ignor- ing the great loss in gross, and consider all well, it might indicate good butiness, but, while there has been some improve- ment in the operating reductions, the sad fact remains that the big increase in net has been accomplished by reglect of equipment and upkeep of track; etc., ‘which unfortunately cannot go ou and :’n very long before the day of reckon- ng. And when the day of reckouing comes the bill will be just that much Jarger. The farming community and the live stock interests are in poor comdi- tion, especially the former. And their trouble is being reflected in national gislation, through the so-called gricultural bloc.” The President has recognized it and has taken steps fo consider the situation, and, if pos- ble, find a remedy. Bank Clearings. R. G. Dun & Co., have this to sa; bank clearings arp fluctuations have recently ap- peared in statistics of bank clearings, an aggregate of $4.97%.064.000 at twenty cities in the United States for five days this week, as reported to Dun’s review, representing a loss of 23.9 per cent from the figures for a similar period of 1920. Last week, in contrast, there was a decrease of only 7.9 per cent. Of the ninetzen cities outside of New York which are included in the statement, “four report larger clearings this week than w year ago, there being a gain ©of 14.6 per cent at Baltimore, 9.6 per cent at Detroit, 0.2 per cent at Los + Angeles and 2.6 per cent at Seattle. For all the outside centers, however, the week’s total is 18.2 per cent below the & y on being 4.7 per cent at Cleveland and 34.7 per cent at Omaha. At New York city, there is a falling ©ff of 27.1 per cent. Average daily bank clearings for December to date and for preceding months this year are compared here- with for two years: December .
