) ' you'd stop caring about me. Peter’s Curiosity Is Too Much for Him. BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. To caution turn a heedful ear; *Twill save you much of neediess fear. —Peter Rabbit. No sooner d1d Peter Rabbit think of Buster Bear than curiosity took possession of him. He had just seen Mother Bear and the twins, Boxer and ‘Woof-Woof, go in under the great plle of fallen trees In the Green For- est, and he felt sure that they had gone there to sleep for the winter. He was quite positive in his own mind that they would not be seen again until spring. It would be great news to spread among his friends. Peter ‘was very much excited. " i WHEN HE DREW NEAR THAT %DGE\;&)F ROCKS HE STOPPED And then he thought of Buster Bear, the father of the twin cubs, and at once began to wonder if Buster had gone to sleep for the winter. The more he thought of this the more curious he became. He remembered that Buster and Mrs. Bear had not spent the winter before together. Mrs. Bear had_ spent it under this very me windfall, while Buster had slept in a little cave under a ledge of rocks some distance away. Would he do the same thing this year? Or would he join Mrs. Bear and the cubs under the windfall? Perhaps he was in there already. Buster had been with his family more or less ever since the latter part of summer. “I don't belleve he is in there yet,” thought Peter. “Perhaps he will join them later, Of course, they may not have gone in there for the winter, but somehow I almost know they have. It may be that Buster Bear will spend the winter by himself, just as he did 128t vear. and has already gone to bed in that little cave under the ledge of rock: It won't do any harm to run over there and find out. I guess there won't be any danger.” “Better be satisfied with what you' already have founud out and scampe! back to the dear Old Briar-patc! whispered Caution. “But then you won't know about Buster Bear,” sald Curiosity. “You don’t have to know, and it really Is no business of yours, any- way.” declared Caution. “You never will be satisfled until you do know, and to try to find out isn’t going to hurt anyon whispered Curiosity. “The surest way of getting into trouble Is to meddle in things that don’t concern you.” declared Caution. “But you won't be meddling.,” pro- tested Curiosity. “All you have to do is to peep inside that cave and make sure whether or not Buster is there. Then you'll know. “Go home, Peter. Go home as fast as your .legs can .take you. It is the only sensible thing to do,” commanded Caution. “But_find out first about Buster Bear. It won't take you long,” urged Curiosity. Peter hesitated only a few minutes more, and then Curiosity won. He turned and headed straight for that ledge of rocks deep in the Green Forest and away he went, lipperty- lipperty-lip, as fast as his legs could take him. And all the way he kept trying to make himself believe that it wasn't curlosity that was taking him over there. When he drew near the ledge of rocks he stopped running and began to move slowly and carefully, stop- ping every two or three steps to look and listen. He saw nothing and heard nothing that even hinted of possible danger, and at last reached the en- trance to that little cave where he hoped to find Buster Bear already asleep (Copyright, 1621, by T. T midnjght John Lindsay, cig- arette between his teeth, over- coat recklessly open to the November gale, paced up and down a draughty platform, waiting for a train to New York. He had dashed out of his father- in-law’s house an hour earlier, heart- sick at his bride's- behavior.. For ‘weeks he had been waiting impa- tiently for her to come back to him, striving to make the best of her frag- mentary letters. He had truly tried to be reasonable. He knew that she was sore distressed by her father's unexplained absence, that she was engrossed in the difficult task of get- ting the huge house ready for rental, and he had been sincerely distressed when she had sent him world that his employer, Richard Slocum, was lying ill in the house with pneumonia. But as the long days passed with brief letters or none, he began to feel that he was a much-abused and neg: lected husband. He could not under- stand why, with her aunt in charge of the house and competent physi cians and nurses caring for Richard, it was necessary for Merriam to re- ‘main longer. ‘When he had entered the house at ® o'clock that evening after a hard day of travel to surprise his wife, he had pictured a glowing Merriam, who would fling herself at him joyfully. e had not remotely grasped from her letters what a terrific strain Richard's illness had been upon the household. He was utterly dazed by the fact that she did not come downstairs for several minutes after his arrival had been announced. The dignity of the beautiful old drawing room in which he was forced to wait seemed like cold formality to him. And the pas- «ive little person who met him so «uietly like some strange woman. arcely had she sat down to talk with him when a white-clad nurse had beckoned from the doorway, and ~he had disappeared. He had stood two tense hourus more of waiting, :nd finally bolted, like the big boy that he still was, as impulsively as 1~ had come, leaving a brief note be- Tiind him. He felt, as he paced the platform, that he had lost all hold on Liis fickle little wife. Bewildered and uphappy, he :mped up and down, shame in his ‘”I‘ that he could feel so bitter inst that sick man. His train was just drawing into the station when a tempestous young woman, motor coat thrown carelessly over her trailing neglige, frivolous satin slippers stained with mud, cam speeding like a comet down the run- way. Bronze curls fiying. brown eyes, flashing, she caught hold of his arm and literally dragged him away from the train. “John Munro Lindsay!” she shriek: above the rumble of the trainshed, “What on earth do you mean, run- ning away like this - Oh, but you ought to be ‘shamed of yourself. You march right out to that roadster!” If he had been a naughty schoolboy of six and she his exasperated teacher, she could not have scolded him more roundly. She propelled him vigorously toward the side street. Six foet of good-looking blondness, he trailed meekly after her, trying with masculine propriety to pull the coat! more closely around her shoulders. Merriam herself was blessedly un- conscious that there were any star- ing bystanders. She fairly shoved him Into the roadster, jumping after him to jam her foot on the starter with such a bang that the little car almost leapt away. { | | | ! | Just to see her so glowing with| color, her old spirit flaring, made hh! heart grow warm within him. wanted to laugh with delight, he wanted to take her in his arms and tell her how hungry he had been for her—— “It will take me and years tell you all the (hlngl I'm fl.lllklll‘ about you. You've no more sense than a plum orchard rtb it.” He couldn't get a word In edge she was talk- ing so rapidly. shn lubhled floods of detail about Richard’s temperatuures, what the doctors , what the nurses had sald. “How on earth you'd think I'd be such a cowardy, custardy quitter as to go off and They were in the dimly lighted hnlxvuy now. There's nothing more we can do. Rich won’t be awake for an hour or so, they think.” She closed the door and leaned against it limply. One of the dear, illogical moods so peculiarly her own possessed her. Vivid and lovely, she smiled up at him. “Whew!” she breathed. *“You dear old opportune peach! You can't guess how we've all been glumping around. Me ’specially, just mushy from want- ing to see you. Just jammed full of murses’ post-mortems. Trying to be a saintly little cuss that I aren’t. Pep all oozing out, and along you come, right at the low-mindest minute. Why, this night to pass! And here you are —big and healthy and grouchy for me to get mad at! Do you know"™ eyes were wide with wonder- 'm 8o zippy from getting mad that I 1ust can’t believe that Rich isn't lying up there getting zippy, too?”’ John took her in his arms. “Try our temper cure eh?’ he asked. “Will you ever forgive me for being such a—" She put her hand over his lips. Isn’t it quite annoying when pour- ing paraffin into your jelly glasses to have it spill over the sides? And it e 5€ems no matter how careful one is, If using a pot or ladle, this is sure to happen. A simple way to prevent this waste and annoyance is to get a very small metal tea or coffee pot, an inex- pensive oné. After cutfln‘ the para- ea fin into small pieces, put them into the teapot and stand the pot over a small flame or on the back of your range. When the wax is melted, take the pot from the stove, and with the greatest ease and comtowou will be able to cover your Jolly th its pro- tecting wax. USEWIFD. . (mnfi. m) The Children’s Hour.
