New York Symphony—Marguerite D’Alvarez. ‘Walter Damrosch made his farewell { appearance of the season at the Na- tional Theater yesterday afternoon, be- fore a large and distinguished audi- ence, which demonstrated its apprecia- tion of him and of his splendid orches- tra in an ovation of applause both at the beginning and ending of the con- cert. The program opened with Beethoven’s beautiful “Symphony in C Minor,” a; composition which we are told seeks to express in music the Inherent nob- | ity of human nature as the master’ musician saw it surmount obstacles by passing through periods of consola tion of redemption to final victory. This is expressed in the symphonic movements by a simple lyrical theme, now bold, now faint, as it overshadows or is eclipsed by conflicting motifs. At times it is echoed by single groups of instruments, until after tossing it Amusements THE EVENING Ford Sisters, in “Dancing Around,” with D, Apollon and their own or- chestra; “Bernice's Christmas” a typieal yule-tide holiday scene in Merrie England of ye olden tymes, under the direction of Angele Keir, B. The suite, which is written in the simple style of seven- teenth century Couperin, is yet start- lingly complex in its ultra-modern | harmony. Strange dissonances burst | forth unexpectedly, and then resolve into a gentle minov refrain, expressed in light pizzicato notes by the stringed instruments. The final m, which is an animated dance, “Rigau- don,” terminates abruptly. but not in the strange discord which seemed | somewhat to mar the impression of the “Minuet” preceding it. A symphonio poem, “Les Preludes, by Liszt! embodying a prose sket by Lamartine, concluded the program. Lamartine teils us that life is but a series of preludes to the great un known, and the composer briefly d. fines them in periods of ‘“love “storm,” ‘“country life” and “war, with an introduction, and a dramatic conclugion with the crashing symbal and cannonade of “war” still resound- ing in the ear. i arguerite D'Alvarez, the soloist of the afternoon, won her audience im- mediately with a rich contralto voice which rose to powerful volume in “Air | de Lia” from Debussy's “L'Enfant] 1 Prodigue,” and subsided into reverber- | ant sustained tones in “Ye Who Have; Yearned Alone,” Tschaikowsky, | and in Bizet's “Agnus Dei.” Mme. D'Alvarez might be termed a dramatic contralto, for she sings with lmore depth of feeling than is express- ed by many artists, and seems to en- velop herself in the atmosphere of a composition, although we see her istanding before us on the crowded! orchestra platform. This was espe- | clally true in her rendition of| “Seguidilla” from *“Carmen,” for she!} lived the part of the carefree senorita for the brief duration of the song. Washington music lovers will be in“ terested to know that Mme. D'Alvarez will return for a recital in January. E. D. E. Hamlet. Sothern's Hamlet will go down in stage history probably as one of the jEreatest portrayals of the melan- . choly prince of Denmark. His is | the interpretation of Hamlet as the scholar and philosopher. While oth- ers have seen in this character more of the gay, talented young courtier gone mad through sorrow and the conflicting passions right and wrong, Mr. Sother; conception seems the more convincing for its intellectual and scholorly execution. One is involuntarily impressed with the studious care which marks his work in every phase. His soliloquy reaches a perfection seldom attained on the Shakesperean stage today. Miss Marlowe's personality and her | wonderful voice lend exquisite charm to her traditional Ophelia. Her mad scene is sympathetic and emotional in its execution, yet she spares- her audience the horror and revulsion too often the weakness of less tal- ented artists. Mr. Sothern is fortunate, indeed, in a company whose collective abil- ity maintains the high standord! he has set for his Shakesperean rep- | ertory. A convincing interpretation of Claudius, a character too often neglected as a role of minor impor- tance, is given by Mr. V. I. Gran- ville. Mr. Frank Peters admirably portrays the narrow minded and scheming Polonius, and Mr. Sydney Mather is an impulsive, passionate Laertes. As Gertrude, queen of Den- mark, Miss Alma Kruger's emotional powers are manifest to good advan- tage in her conception of the sting | ! As Horatio, Mr. Fred- erick Lewis might show more of the passionate side of his love for Ham- let, although he prefers a dignified and perhaps deeper conception of his part. i The value of the Sothern plays are enhanced by modern mechanism and stage fixings which allow a quick change of scenery, and while the settings as a whole are simple, they are tasteful and adequate. The light- ing effects during the appearance of the ghost are most effective. Mr. Sothern and Miss Marlowe will appear in “The Merchant of Venice” tonight. The curtain rises at 8 o'clock sharp. Elman-Winogradoff Sunday. | Mina Elman, Mischa Elman’s sister, will make her debut in Washington Sunday at the New Willard ballroom in joint recital with the Russian bari- }ione, Josef Winogradoff. Josef Wino- lgradoff is famed in Russia and | throughout the European music lworld.
