ELLIS. Next in importance, as a confer- ence factor, to the nation-wide ex- pression of desire for armament lim- itation and progress toward peace, and in good part responsible for these, is the broad American basis of .American interest in Asig as a mission fleld. For a hundred years past this country has been building foundations for its political poifey of international altruism. The explanation of the seemingly quixotic_concern of the government of the United States for the welfare of the weak peoples, and for the spead of idealism, is to be found in the millions—literally millions—of missionary sermons and addresses and prayer meetings, and in the tens of imilifons of pages of missionary lit- erature, which have been directed upon the present generation of Amer- jcans. It is doubtless a safe general- jzation to declare that the missionary irit and work is the most typically \inerican of all the general expres- Aions of our national life. Certainly it is what underlies the present con- serence. Still the man on the street done by the United States, speaking in terms of agents employed and dis- tribution of activities, is Christian missions. & Equal to Commercial Interests. Our commercial stakes abroad, such as exported oil, coal, steel, cotton, grain and manufactures, do not out- rank, on the whole, our exportation and investment of religion. No other one of our foreign enterprises has anything like so immense a domes- tic interest and support behind it. A retwork of American missions vers Asia. In some Asiatic countries, h as Persia, America has no other vested interest than Christian mis- . sions. 1In the far east. tho fleld of this conference, there are at present . engaged no less than 4.100 American missionaries, with native assistants employed to a far greater number. During the year, 1919, the latest for which detailed figures are avail- able, a total of $11,284,064 was sent from this country to Japan, Korea ! and China for missionary purposes. This represents only the annual out- lay upon these three countries alone; does not know that far and away the biggest single foreign business the permanent investment, in mllllonl ‘ xtatlons, homes, hospitals, schools. i vo many millions of dollars that no- churches and equipment, represents body seems quite willing to estimate it. Donations fn Small S This vast American investment in the far east is not provided by any single corporation. - 1t comes in drib- lets from individaals, young and old, in every section of the land. to total number of more than 26.000,000 persons. If where one's treasure Is, there also is one's heart, America may be said to be heartily interested in the territory covered by this con- ference. ) The vital cord of sustaining life- blood, personal and financial interest, connects this orlental mission work with literally every neighborkood in the United States. By way of every church in thé country, of all denom- inations, with all of its agencies of propaganda and money-raising, which include the little tots in the Sunday school, and the women of the mission- ary societies, not to mention the reg- ular Sunday services, this enterprise of foreign missions permeates the whole nation. Therein may be found one explanation for the astonishing support In America of the parley upon arms and the east. (Copyright, 192 FATALLY SHOT, PASTOR DRIVES CAR THREE MILES Rev. John Melvin McFarland Dies at Hospital in Cumberland After Accident While Hunting. Speeial Dispatch to The Star. CUMBERLAND, Md., December 10. —Rev. John Melvin McFarland, pas- stor of the Oldtown circuit, Balti- more Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, died at the Western Mary- land Hospital’ here late yesterday afternoon from a gunshot wound In the hip, accidentally sustained while hunting in thé morning in the vicin- ity. of Oldtown. Death was largely dué to loss of blood. The clergyman was out in his au- tomobile, about three miles from home, and had shot a pheasant. He reloaded his gun for ready use should he.see game while moving along. He placed the gun on the seat of the car-and in getting into the machine caused the weapon to fall to the tloor, the jar setting it off. Despite .the wound in his thigh, from which blood streamed profuse- 1v, he drove his machine three miles baek home, got out, opened the gate an@ then fell to the ground. He was rughed to the hospital here and bore up ‘well under the. trip, being able to converse after he reached the insti- tution. He was operated upon in the afternoon, but was unable to survive the shock. Mr. McFarland was thirty-two years old. He wus. born near Winchester, Va., whére his father, Charles McFar- 1and, resides. All his relatives, includ- ing, several brothers and sisters, live in “that section. His early life was spent on & farm and later he was em- played for several years in a woolen milt at Winchester. In the meantime he .proceeded to prepare for the min- stey and was licensed to preach five years ago by’ Rev. Harry G. Spencer, Piedmont, W. Va., then pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Win- chester. He was a supply preacher unti] last April, when he was regu- larl; mitted into the -Balttmore conference and assigned to the Old- town charge. Previously he acted as s;‘a’nplx on the Union Grove circuit in this county. His wife was Miss Susan McFarland of near Cumberland, having the same surname as himself. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2:3i from the church of which he was pas- tor. SUNDAY SHOWS CLOSED. Montreal to Allow Only “Movies’” _ to Operate.
