2 RED CROSS RAISE BUT SXTH OF QUOTA Roll Call Failure in District Great Disappointment to Soliciting Committee. For the first time since the charter of the District Red Cross was granted, in 1905, the local organization has failed to reach its quota for the roll <all within fhe given time. This announcement was made yes- terday by E. A. Mitchell, chairman of the fifth annual Red Cross roll call, following the close of the period for soliciting membership yesterday. Less Than $10,000 Ralsed. TLess than $10,000, which is one- sixth of the quota, was recorded from receipts in bank today, although sev- eral auxiliaries and committees have Bot reported finally. Although roll call headquarters, at 1414 F street, will be closed after Monday, memberships and contribu- tions will be received until the quota is obtained at the American Red Cross, 16 Jackson place. “Never before has the Red Cross of Wuhlngton fallen down on its quota any work or campaign for funds thn has been allotted to it,” said a statement issued today. “Until this Year the efforts and hard work of ihose who volunteered have not been n valn, but have always been com- pensated by splendid results . More Donations Urged. . *When there is sull so much work %o be done and so many obligations for the Red Cross to fulilll, it i3 hard to belleve that the people of this ity are going to withdraw their sup- crt from this great, far-reaching or- anization. Therefore, though the eamphizn has officially ended, mem- Derships and Conations will still be received at chapter headquarters.” ANTI-SALOON LEAGUE ‘CONVENTION HERE DEC. 1 [ Twentieth National Meeting of Or- ganization to Begin Next Thursday. ‘qme twentieth national convention ot the Anti-Saloon League of America will open a week's session here hursday, December 1, in the First tongregational Church. Boo-Hoe-00 Hoo-0-0 OH — T_ On Foot I Pedestrians are often sinners, against the laws; they’re much to blame, when choo-choo wagons, made by tinners, collide with them and knock them lame. The motorists get roasts a-plen- ty, and they are fined and placed in hock, when they’ve run down some eight or twenty cheap sports who don’t know how to walk ; who dodge around among the buses, and laugh all traffic rules to scorn, until the moral driver cusses and wonders why they e’er were born. Just now we are exhorting drivers to end the present reign of fear,so there may be a few survivors when next the census men appear. And I exhort the walking voters to bear in mind the rules of Hoyle, and not run down de- fenseless motors, and make the blood of chauffeurs boil. When some one’s hurt the crowds as- semble, attracted by the sick’n- ing thud, and straightway make the welkin tremble, demanding some poor driver’s blood. SURVIVED-WRECK; SHOT. As a sequel to an argument between Wesley King and Joseph Parker, both colored, which_was precipitated by an automoblile accident at 1st and G streets southwest Wednesday, the former was shot and killed. Parker was arrested shortly afterward near the scene of the crime, and is said to have admitted to the police that he fired the shot which killed King. When an automobile in which King and Parker were riding overturned they engaged in a heated debate as to who should be responsible for the damage done to the machine. Parker, angered because King demanded that he pay for the repair of the car, according to the police, went to his home at 491 Cul- linane court southwest, procured a re- volver and returning to lst and G streets fired at King. ‘The wounded man was taken to the Emergency Hospital and lived only a few hours.
