O, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1921. Many Children Found on Rolls Of Washington Night Schools Employed children are recog- nizing more than ever the need of a better education and are making an effort to secure it in Washingt,n's night schools, ac- cording to Mlss Eleanor J. Keene, chief clerk In charge of the child labor office. Miss Keene expressed the opinion that more children than ever before, who deserted the school- room to. work, are attending the night schools, public and private, Wwith a view to bettering their posi- tions. Statistics complled by Miss Keene show that there are 1,865 children in the District who come Wwithin the scope of the child la- bor and compulsory education laws, holding permils to work. Of this number 865 have tempo- rary permits which are issued pending the correction of physical defects of the holders. Seven hundred and sixteen of the children holding finished per- mits are white boys and 152 are Wwhite girls. Eighty colored boys and seven colored girls have fin- | ished permits. The small number of colored girls holding the work permits is ascribed to the fact that no permits are needed for *| girls engaged in domestic service. The figures show that 105 work permits recommended by the child labor office were approved by | Judge Kathryn Sellers of the Ju- | venile Court. Under the present | child labor and compulsory edu- | cation laws the child labor office | has no power to issue a permit to a chlld who has not attended | school 130 days in the past year; | fourteen vears of age to return to school. Therefore, in view of the fact that the child in all proba- bility would spend his time on the streets, the child labor office recommends that the judges of the Juvenile Court walve the schooling certificate. The temporary permits ssued pending the correction of physical defects of the applicants are fol- lowed up by the child labor office, with the aid of the public school nurses. The number of children holding the temporary permits s ‘a decrease of 103 under last year's number, due to the assistance of the school physicians and nurses, the free dental clinics in the schools and the co-operation of the parents of the children. There were 107 permits refused because the children applying for them failed to have corrected thelr physical defects. Three hundred and ninety-nine boys are holding badges entltling them to engage in strest trades. This is a decrease of 173 under last year. ARMY MEN ASSIGNED. BErig. Gen. Charles H.
