Oc- tober 3.—-Trading quieted down on the stock exchange today. probably because the Jewish holiday cut down the attendance and partly because there was a disposition to await the response to the advance In certain groups of stocks at the close of last week. The professional element were looking for a reaction and shaping their ventures accordingly. As it turned out, the market was a good deal stronger than these operators were reckoning upon. Realizing sales stoppéd the rise in the coppers, but oil shares readily absorbed their part of the profit-taking offerings and most of them pushed ahead. It was in the cotton market, how- ever, that interest chiefly centered, this because of the publication of the ginning report and the report on crop conditions covering the perfod up to September 25. The prox- imity ‘of Seneca to the rich lake cop- per mines is a source of attraction from a speculative standpoint. Lehigh Valley. Wall street has begun to refer to the coming Lehigh *Valley segregu- tion plan as a “melon without sceds. 1t means by this that unlike the Rea ing case, stockholders will not have to pay for the privilege of sharing in the melon. This is why no repetition of the Reading debacle is looked for in Lehigh Valley. There are all sorts FINANCIAL. | NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE Recelved by Private Wire Open.
