Bids of $2,100 each, offered by the Ship Construction and Trading Com- pany, Inc., of New York, for 186 of the government’s wooden ships have been rejected by the Shipping Board, General Counsel Schlesinger an- { nounced last night. A new survey of the status of the wooden fleet has been ordered by Chairman Lasker. Mr. Schlesinger: said the proposal -of the Ship Construction and Trading Company did not conform to the conditions stated in the advertise- ment in that no certified check was attached and the bid was so drawn as to include large quantities of stores, equipment and supplies, while the ships were offered for sale as bare boats. Action on this bid, the only one received up to that time, was/ taken at a_meeting of the board Septem- ber 20. While negotiations were in progress between the board and the Ship Construction and Trading Com- pany other proposals were received for the purchase of all or part of the fleet on the basis of $2,400, $2,600 and $3.000 per ship, but the board de- cided they had not been submitted in regular course and could not be constdered as proposals under the ad- vertisement. Informal opening of the Racquet Club on 16th street, will be held tomorrow, and while there will be no special cere- ! monies attached to the opening of Washington's newest club, an inspection of the club's elaborate rooms and facili- ties may be made. The management of the club requests, however, that the number of*isitors be small, 50 as not to interfere with the last-minute work that will be going on. Work is being rushed both day and night, and while all arrangements will not be in a full state of completeness, a good showing is expected to be made. Three of the five floors to be used for sleeping quarters will be in readiness, and members will be permitted to take up their residence at the club. It is anticipated that a breakfast can be served Sunday morning. The first and second floors are almost complete, although there is some work to be done on_the paneling ins ome of | the rooms, including the cardroom. The dining room, finished yesterday, presents a fine appearance. One of the features of the club which will be especially enjoyed by the mem- bers during the warm days this fall ‘and next spring and summer is the {fine .tiling that has been laid on the i ground floor.
