STOREKEEPER HELD FOR KILLING FOUR Indicted on Charge of Slaying Three in One Family and Firing Home. By the Associated Press. MIDDLETOWN, Conn., September 30.—Emil Schutte, a storekeeper in Haddam, has been indicted for murder on two counts by a grand jury. One indictment charged him with having shot and killed Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ball and Jacob Ball, aged seventeen a son, after he had set fire to the Ball home. The other accuses Schutte of having killed his farmhand, Dennis La Duc, by shooting, and then de- stroying the body by fire. The crime alleged in the first in- dictment is_said to have been com- mitted on the night of December 10, 1915. The farmhand disappeared about April 24 last. Som Makes Complaint. Schutte was arrested _several months ago on complaint of a son, who claimed that his father had threatened his mother and had chased her from home, gun in hand. An inquiry by the state police led to the discovery of bones in the ashes of ia bonfire in a nearby wood lot, which | the police allege to be the remains of La Duc's body. A young son of Schutte told the police that his | father and La Duc had quarreled. | The boy also, it is understood, gave i the police information regarding the bonfire. The house in which the Ball family {lived adjoined the Schutte home. Schutte is alleged by the police to have had a houndary dispute with the Balls. The bodies were exhumed dur- ing the inquiry and the state alleges that Schutte shot members of the Ball family as they attempted to es- cape from the burning house. WOUNDED BY BULLET.
