ARMY IN GERMANY “SITTING ON THE WORLD” “Never Was a Better Dressed Mili- tary Organization,” Says Officer, ‘Who Has Returned. NEW YORK, September 15 (Spe- cial).—Lieut. Kie Cody, who has re- turned from the area occupied by the American Army in Germany, is quoted by the New York Times as speaking in the highest praise of the Rhine Army. “You can’t say anything too good about the A. E. F. Lieut. Cody. cers there almost without exception dread the day when they will come back. The men particularly dislike the thought so much that they refuse to talk about it. There never has been an army which is ‘sitting on the world’ as those fellows are. “With many opportunities. they avoid getting” into trouble because the penalty is being sent home. An- other reason is the spirit of sports- manship which has been cultivated by Gen. Allen. There are foot ball, base ball, polo. shooting and track s trying to break records. ft three teams were tied for first place, the Quartermaster’s Corps, the Headquarters Troop and the Fifth Infantry teams. “They have gone in for horse rac- ing a good deal and have built their own race track and steeplechase course. AS a result there has been a general hunt for good horses by officers and they have bred and trained some of the finest animals the Army ever contained. It makes good horsemanship. They also play polo a good deal. The rifle teams have resulted in more sharpshooters and marksmen being produced than ever before in an army of that size. When they competed against the British, French and Belgians, they took first place in nearly every event. They beat us at machine gun fire. T knew one officer who felt so badly at his score that he wouldn't permit his name to be put down and said he would wait till he got back with line troops o he could get necessary prac- tice. He wouldn't lower his team's record. “Although the men are able to buy all the beer and wine they want, there is hardly an instance of a man taking too much. Drinking wine and beer has made them temperate. No whisky or cognac is permitted in the area and even at the officers’ club cocktafls are barred. Champagne is less than $1 a bottle and the men can buy it if they want to, but they which by Z Kane, who has ‘been in n and later visited _Germany, Lieut. pdy on the hey won't se out their and get only the trad There never was a better dressed nd the men are proud of their ance. hen an officer travels he is con- stantly the object of solicitous at- tention,” said Capt. NEW YORK, September 15.—Ar- thur Curtiss James, former commo- dore of the New York Yacht Club, embarked with a small party today on his 218-foot yacht Aloha for a 33,000-mile cruise around the world. The trip will last until next May. ‘The first leg of the voyage will take them through the Panama canal and to Honolulu. The yacht will then head for China, where a long stop will be made. The party will then go to France, by way of the Suez canal. Various European ports will be visited before the homeward trip is started. AIMS AT SPECULATION. German Government May Take Steps to Control Money Market. BERLLN, September 13.—With a view to counteracting {insensate bourse speculation, the government, according to the Tageblatt, is con- templating steps to establish some measure of control of the money market by a system of “rationing” or, as a last resort, sequestrating forelgn currencies or bills thrown. on the market in excess of what is regarded as legitimate requirements. The difficulties of such intervention are obvious, and the Tageblatt learns it would not be resorted to except in the last extremity. As an alternative, the government is reported to be seeking a means to induce German exporters and indus- trialists to transfer, without compul- sion on their part, their foreign bills to the treasury. The Tageblatt is of the opinion that the time to intervene is now and that all requisitions of foreign currencies or bills should be immediately placed under govern- ment control.
