Lamont of J. P. Mor- gan & Co. Complies With Re- quest of Bankers’ Committee. NEW YORK, September 15.—Thomas W. Lamont of J. P. Morgan & Co., will leave for Mexico City the end of this month to discuss with Mexican gov- ernment officials the status of that country’s external obligations. - Mr. Lamont will make the trip at f the request of the international com- mittee of bankers on Mexico, of which he is acting chairman. The Mexican government extended an invitation to the committee some time ago. Accompanied by a secretarial staff and statistical assistants, Mr. La- mont will recelve suggestions of the Mexican government and report back to_the committee. ‘The commiVtee represents British, French, Swiss, Dutch and Belgian in- terests. It was reported on the street that the state department was cOg- nizant of Mr. Lamont’'s proposed visit and the governments of the various foreign interests involved had given hearty encouragement. The external debt of the Mexican government has been roughly esti- mated at $200,000,000. This is ex- clusive of accrued interest, long in default, amounting to about $40,000,- 000 additional. England is said to be Mexico’s largest creditor, with France probably ranking second. Germany also had large sums in- vested in Mexican external obliga- tions. That country will not be directly represented in the coming discussions, however, because the international committee was organ- ized two years ago, when most of its members still were at war with her. —_— Of the total number of 1,277 char- acters in Shakespeare's plays, 167 are i females.
