CONGREGATIONAL FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH ‘Tenth and G Streets N\W. Jason Noble Pierce, Minister September 10, 1921. AN OPEN LETTER: A university professor and a church deacon were having an argument. The man of science conceded that there was such a thing as luck, but maintained that a person’s religious beliefs had nothing to do with it. He stated that the experiences of life were the same for bad people as for good. The deacon, on the other hand, maintained they were not the same, but that there was a special Providence always at work in behaif of good people. The argu- ment waxed wai nd strangely enough both men quoted Scripture. The deacon quoted the words of St. Paul in Romans §:28: vAnd we know that all ¢ mln o rock “fi"‘" for mxl to them that love God, to them who are the. But immediately the man ol ldence quoted Wllh glee the sec- ond verse of the ninth chapter of Ecclesiastes: *“All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the fuod and clesn, and,to the unciea; to bim that sac- rificeth and to 1t certainly was a hard dl}' l’or the deacon. Somebody ran into the back of his auto which he had left at a parking space. His wife telephoned him that their youngest child had the whooping-cough, a policeman on Connecticut avenue interviewed him for driving too fast, and an irreligious rascal, who never went to church but played golf all day Sunday, beat him out for first place in the golf tourna- ment. Nevertheless, in spite of it all, the deacon was an optimist. The question is, which of the two men was right? I shall deal ".’h"h this nubjécht vago;rfintk!!‘ Sunday morning at 11 o'clock under e subject, “When nters.’ 3 —SUNDAY NIGHT— On Sunday evening at 7:30 o'clock our organist, Mr. Harry Ed- ward Muoller, will give an organ recital on the new, magnificent The program will be as follows: Fryeinges clock service y lhlll pmch a miracle sermon.on the thame. ‘Tha Iron Olu Openl." I suspect that not every one will agree with the sermon or with what I think an honest, intelligent Christian can belleve about miracles. Acts 13:10 tells us that. when an ang¢! was helping St. Peter to escape from prison—"And when they were past the first and sec- ond guard, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth into the city; which opened to them of its own accord ., . .» Did you ever see an iron gate open of its own accord? Honest- 1y, do you believe one ever did? Let me confess that I am an opti- mist as to the willingness and power of God to-help you to open the doors of olgpol‘hlnuy ‘which sometimes seem to be stuck fast. That is whv 1 should like you to hear this message. Every one should have his own church home and ‘worship there. -A most cordial invitation is extended to strangers and to those without & church home-to vonhlglmth us on Sunday. : ImN ncerely yourl.P Immanuel Baptist Church 16th street and Columbla road, THE '!AOTIDIAL"; Y2 IT MEMORIAL APTIS!
