FINANCIAL. Bt 2 HE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. O, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 19?1 PART 2. HELP AND SITUATIONS. 'BUSINESS THROUGHOUT NATION SHOWING RAPID IMPROVEMENT L strial Plants and Companies See Both Profits and Production Possible Even at Present Prices. " BY BYRON SELLER. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK. September 10.—Busi- | ness throyghout the United States continues to be as good. as business mhen make it, and dispatches received within the last twenty-four hours in- dicate that they are rapidly making!available now than at any time sin it better. Industrial plants and com- panies and individuals engaged in basic industries are rapidly bringing their businesses to a point wheré both profits and production are as- “ sured even at present prices and un- der present conditions. Busineéss has responded throughout the south to the increase in the price of cotton as though by the wand of & magician, and this rejuvenation, with its accompanying liquidation of old debts, has been keenly reflected in the grain-growing areas. Confidence and optimism in the midwest has been enhanced by realization that the wheat yield has been less heavy than was at first anticipated, and by satis. factory development of export tol nage demands. Content With Narrow Margins. Productivity is the problem occu- Ppying the attention of every far- sighted business man. Those who have realized that the days have passed when it was possible to sell all possible output rggardless of cost of production or price to consumers are ae:kingl to!discgver‘,’ not hgw wi n of rofit they can de- e & T o DO N atain of | net operating income in July of $69,- 485,000, the largest since last October and $17,000,000 more than in June, laccoding to the Association of Railway This problemy of productivity is nD!lExec““_V?S on the basis of reports one e Nabor solely. This was proved conclusively by the |The compilations were based on re- class 1 raijroads automobile tire manufacturers of Ak- ron. Consequently they show every indication that in the future they will demand that a fair standard of individual productivity be maintained by their workers and the present state of unemployment gives them confidence that they will be able to “obtain it. - Productivity Main Object. L But if they are demanding that each worker come up to’ standard, they are even more insistent that each dollar of capital as represented in plant, equipment and sales organi- zations maintain ‘an even higher standard of productivity. They real- ize that the individual efficiency of the worker is more important than his wage scale and that the efficlency of every dollar of capital is more important than sales prices. In ad- dition, they point out that increased productivity does not mean less jobs, but more jobs through broadening of operations and that it means a tre- mendous increase in prosperity for all when normal conditions finally return. Tt is unnecessary to look further than the railroads to see the effect of this principle. Their reeords‘l show that by means of increased|for Jul productivity of capital and labor they are changing deficits into sur- pluses and are handling tonnage with a remarkable absence of delay or car shortage. It has been equally efficient in promoting the resumption of steel plants even under adverse conditions. Settlement of the building trades controversies in Chicago by Judge Landis has been efficacious fn pro- moting agreements in other cities, and within the next few weeks the entire country will begin to_feel the effects of building revival. Lum- ber is moving under an increased demand, which also is responsible for firmness of prices in other build- ing materials and hardware. Full Speed in Textile Centers. The larger textile centers not only are working at full speed, but with assurance of continued activity for months to come. Coal is responding slowly to the demand occasioned by the l{lcrensed activity in industrial plants as well as to the demand for domestic_uses. Retail business took a decided brace after Labor day, and many merchants have been under necessity of reordering to replenish rowers. Slight Increase Is Seen' In Great Lakes Commerce ber 10 (Special).—Commerce on the| great lakes showed only a slight in- crease during the last month. A total of 1,879 vessels of 4,960,921 tons registered burden passed through the locks here. Westbound traffic in- cluded 1,698,000 gons eof soft coal, 489,000 tons of hard coal, 3,856 tons of manufactured iron and steel, 21,291 tons of oil, 3.540 tons of salt, 94,603 tons of stone and 59,000 tons of gen- eral merchandise. 5, The eastbound traffic included 44,000 feet -of lumber, 232,250 barrels of flour, 10,132,267 bushels of wheat, 2,588 short tons of copper, 4,384,959 tons of iron ore, 6,375 tons of stone and 9,982 tons of general merchandise. prospects is that more than a million dollars’ worth of grain has been re- ceived in Superior, Wis, each day since August 15. An unusually large amount of grain has come from the southwest, notably from Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska, as well as large shipments from North Dakota. Notes of Commodities " In Various Centers / Automobiles. CLEVELAND, September, 10 (Spe- clal).—The White Motor Company did only 61 per cent as much business in the first six months of 1921 as in the corresponding period of 1920. September wheat gained 9; December, 10%, and May 11% points during the week, while corn's close last night showed it to be up 2 to 2% over the closing fig- ures of a week ago, and oats, showing some independent strength at times, A feature of the eastbound traffic' jumped 3% to 4% higher on the week. The bulge was started early in the week, when outside investment or- ders ' were increased; when outside interests and local com- mission houses proved to be heavy buyers in the middle of the week, and | it ‘reached its high point yesterday on generally bullish news that more than offset the bearish government crop report, the drought in Argen- tina being a factor. Corn was helped by the advance in wheat on every turn, and on occa- sions the bulge of wheat turned a weak corn market into a firm one. Oats was also assisted during the week by the wheat market, but not to the extent that corn benefited, oats owing independent strength. May oats showed the most gain, ad- vancing from 41 to 45% during the 10.—Wheat | STENOGRAPHER—Permanen torney’s office; must be- apeedy. accurate and experlenced; none other need appi; Apply Suite 212, Ouray bidg., 8th and | INDUSTRIAL, INSURANCE MEN—Two or! more experienced and reliable men for posi- splendid opportunity for those who can convince us that they can deliver !h"n wln’dlihnone glhlmlrflben“n::g poly, and only ihose who have represented Address Box 324D, tions_outside of D.
