WASHINGTON, FIFTY WASHNGTON Some Fine Shots Develop at Camp Meade—Accuracy Shown Bemarkable. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. CAMP MEADE, Md., August 25.— Fifty Washington students attending: the ofvilan myitary. training. camp ere qualified. in the. final round of ‘ahéoting on the 200-yand and rapid- fire ranges today. The remalning ‘'members. of Company M, numbering about forty, were eliminated because |of their extreme youth and lnnblllly to handle the 8-pound Army pie These boys were assigned to “pit” de- tail and ammunition supply. Although the pit detail required plenty of nerve on the part of the amateurs, dozens of boys clamored for the job. With twelve targets operated on a double carriage being shot at simultaneously, the whiz and whistle of bullete reminds one of light infantry attacks at Vimy Ridge. The boys in the pit, however, received absolute protection from the rifle fire. The bull’s-eye of each target is fifteen feet from the bottom of the pit, which is protected in front by heavy sand bags and hardwood sidings. Best Slow-Fire Scores. Up to 11 o'clock this morning the following students made the best. slow-fire scores on the 200-yard range: ‘W. W. Shea, 91; G. W. Wolfe, 89; J. C. Sorenson, 88; T. A. Babbington, 85; Loeber Kennedy, 84; W. F. Trout, 84; C. G. Shores, Jr., 84, and Paul G. Hut- ton, 83. These scores were made in the prone, sitting and kneeling positions. Capt. W.'E. Goe, commanding Com- pany M, declared that hits made by some of the boys were made with re- markable accuracy, coumsidering that, many of the students ere under sev- enteen years of age. “If the blue camp falls in every- thing -else, it will-have developed some fine shots,” he snld. Maj, W. E commanding, marches to the range elch ‘morning with the boys and takes a personal interest in the firing of each mdldate He is ex- tremely proud of the Washington com- pany. Conecludes Practice Today. Company M will conclude its practice on the range this afternoon.. Sharp- shooting and marksmen medals will he awarded Saturday. Tomorrow the 3d Battalion will return to the drill fleld for final instruction in preparation for Saturday’s intercom- pany competitions. A farewell supper will be given by Company M tomorrow night in honor of Capt. Goe, Lieuts. Loucks and Kelly and non-commissioned officers attached to the company.
