i MINE WORKERS’ HEAD SAYS HE WILL GO TO JAIL Howatt Also Declares He Will Re- fuse to Order Men Back as Directed. G, Kan., August 2B Howatt, president of dis- trict 14, United ine Workers of America, in a statement today gom that he would refuse 1} Alexan calling a strik being committed to jail September 8. He will further refuse, according to his statement, to order back to work the striking miners of the Dean and Rellance strip mines as demanded sev- eral days ago by the international ex- ecutive board of the mine workers at Indianapolis. “My position is unchanged,” he said. “District 14 may be spended from the organization or I may be kicked out of office, but the only way I would consent to put the men back to work would be under the customs and con- ditions that prevailed when the men quit work. In spite of the operators and our international organization I do not propose for them to take away the working conditions for which they have sacrificed and struggled for years.” PROBE INTO MILK PRICES UNDER WAY IN BALTIMORE State’s Attorney Shortly Will Be Presented to Grand Jury for Action. pecial Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE. August 25.—A probe into milk prices similar to that con- ducted recently against the alleged coal combine, ‘whieh resulted in the! indictment of practically every retail coal dealer in Baltimore, is being con- ducted by, State's Attorney Leach and it is said-that ihformation would shortly bp. presented to the grand jury for -agtion. He declared that ihere is an association among milk dealers wheneby, through a system of controk of:supply, they are enabled to pile up profiisiat the expense of the consumer,” but that he was not pre- pared to. disclose the details of his investigation Just yet. - The prosecuting officer said that he had sufficient information, however, to show that the members of the al- leged milk combine were “‘as pretty a sct of profiteers as ever pretended to trying to protect the poor con- sumer.” He gives the so-called monopoly credit for cleverness and asserts that the members are holding the farmer between them and the fire of public criticism. One point brought out by the state’s attorney is that in| June the alleged combine received from the farmer probably §00.000 gal- lons of milk at 14 cents a gallon, col- lecting from the consumer 48 cents.
