DECLARES IT LAW-ABIDING Says Many . “Cowardly” Crimes Have Been Committed in Name of Organization. TULSA, Okla, August 11.--Many crimes haye been committed by the cowardly in the name of the Ku Klux Klan, but the order, of which he is a member, i{s composed of law-abiding citizens, Dr. Calgb A. Ridley, Atlanta, Ga., minister, declared in an address |on the aims of and organization of the “invisible empire” here last night. The purpose of the Ku Klux, the speaker said, is three-fold—to protect the weak, fnnocent and defenseless from the outrages of the violent, the lawless and the brutal; to protect and detend the Constitution of the United States, and to aid in the execution of all constitutional laws. The proviso of its membership bar- ring negroes, Jews and Catholics has led many people to believe, according ey, that the Klan is nega- tive and not positive in its aims. Dr. Ridley sald he was not a paid lecturer, but was spending his vaca- tion “between Sundays” speaking for it, in order to combat nsidious propaganda,” which, he sald, has been circulated against it. Most of the large audience at Con- vention Hall were men. They re- m-,|nad quiet and atientive during the man, whether he lives in ana, Oklahoma or Georgl: the spéaker said, “and a white man’s job is to see that civilizatien comes under the dominion of no inferior race so long as he lives.” |ARMY STRENGTH, 155,000.
