You can always tell by what peo- ple say or the way they act just what their real feelings are. Now there was Mrs. Redhead the Woodpecker. Her very first greeting to Redhead on his return to his home was, “Well, it {s time you came home to help take care of your family.” And it wasn't said pleasantly, either. It was said sharply. Redhead was so glad to get home that he was rather upset to be greet- ed g0. “Yes, my dear,” said he, meek- ly. “I didn't intend to stay away. In fact, I couldn’t help it. You see, I met wtih an accldent and—" “Never mind that now," interrupted Mrs. Redhead, crossly. “Fve been working myself to skin and bones t yl & to properly feed these young- and every day it gets worse. I nevar have seen such appetites in my life. 1 never have. For goodness’ sake, Redhead. why don't you get busy and help feed them " —1—I_wanted to see them,” T plied Redhead. apologetically. “Th —they don't Seem to know me,” he added. as he withdrew his head from the doorway of their home. “Know you! Of course they don't know you." exclaimed Mrs. Redhead, fmpatiently. “How should they know you? Here they are lulf-grown aad never have scen you before. If you want them to know you, get them some food. They will know you then fast enough. Where have you been. anyway” Redhead started to tell her all about his adventures. but she interrupted before he was fairly started. “Never mind now." said she. “I haven't time to listen and you haven't time to talk. Get busy! Get bus Mrs. Redhead herself flew off. Red- head looked after her with a puzzled look in his eves. “I thought she would be glad to see me.,” said he, plaintively. Then, suspecting that it wouldn't be wise to be found there Redhead on her return unless something for those hungry ters, he fiew off to hunt for Now, Mrs. Redhead was glad to see Redhead. She was just as glad as a good and true mate could be She was so glad that she was sharper tongued than usual. That seems funny, but it is the way with some people. She was tired. for you know she had had the care of that bi& family all alone. She had been ter- ribly worried. worried about Redhead ang worried about those children, and how she ever in the world would be *“WELL, IT IS TIME YOU CAME HOME TO HELP TAKE CARE UF YOUR FAMILY."” able to feed 50 many hungry mouths. So the very relief and joy of seeing Redhead home again made her seem cross. She wasn't really cross. She just seemed that way. It was her funny way of being giad. Poor Redhead. He didn’t under- stand it. All long he worked and worked hunting for food for those al- ways hun’ry youngsters, who se ed to think of nothing and care for noth- ing but food, and he didn't have a word to say. But Mrs. Redhead did. She had plenty to say. too much, Rel head thought, privately. Between trip: in search of food she scolded him for being slow. for leaving her to do all the work alone 30 long, and for all sorts of imaginary things. It wi just her way of working off her roliet at having him back again. When the last youngster had been fed for the last time that night, Mra. Redhead snuggled up to Redhead for 2 moment. “Oh said she, softly. “I'm so glad you are back. I've wor- ried about you so. Now tell me ail that happened. Then Redhead underatood. and joy and contentment filled his heart, and he forgot all the sharp things Mrs. Redhead had said that day. So he told her all that had happened to him and she told him all about her trou- bles, and both were very, very happy. (Copyright, 1921, by T. W. Burgess.) Fads and Fashions. A popular trimming is the pendant ernament in pin or other forms. A model of crepe coquette ls trim- med with inset bands of georgette. A sport skirt of heavy white silk crepe has inserts of openwerk in blue. The harem veil is being worn. Ma- line is used to veil lower part of face. Smart cloth coats have long, flow- ing sleeves with deep, turn-back cuffs. The envelope pocketbook of faille or moire is embroidered with steel beads. The flannel middy worn with a guimpe and a narrow belt is much in vogue. The fad for guimpes is an out- standing feature of the neckwear world. Coat models being shown for win- ter are three-quarter and full length. A smart knitted angora cape was of henna and buff in alternating stripes. Fringe of inch-wide moire faille rib- bon is used on the latest models. A cape cestume of white silk brocaded, is trimmed with white ut!n stripes. A tust-colored suit of canton crepe has s mandarin jacket and pleated skirt. Motifs of white yarn are used on a copenhagen blue frock of knitted fabric. A feature talked of for fall is the tunic front with shoulder to hem panel at the back. Fall topcoats of English worsted have cape sleeves, shawl collars and narrew fabric belts. They are generally made of plald tweed or knitted woal A costume which is extremely pop- ular is the black crepe frook and coat with borders formed of ends of gros- grain ribbon. Date Patty Cakes. His hands shower milk and honey and perfectos upon his fellow man. Nothing is 100 good for the gang when Jim is around. Ginger ale hurlll forth like the flowers in spring. Jim is a wonder—a reg’lar guy! But somehow, things aren't quite the same when Jim is home. Minnie is one of those creepmousey little women that reg'lar guys seem to ac- cumulate. She never did have much apirit, and since Jim annexed her the little she did have has evaporated. You see. it's quite & job to live up to & reg'lar guy and Minnie isn't up to it. She grows so tired picking up the things he leaves around for one thing—and her back was never strong. And she can't just manage to make ends meet without bothering Jim. Then he roars at her so that her poor little heart gives sick jerks of fright. “What did you do with that last §57" shouts Jim. Naturally he has to be careful. Milk and honey and perfectos cost a lot, and Minnie is inconsiderate and doesn’t understand the many demands made on a reg’lar guy or how a “man has to keep up his position.” So she slaves and cowers and weeps her easy tears while the gang grunt and won- der how a “prince of a fellow hap- pened to pick a lemon like that.
