Two machines were wrecked In making forced landings, but no one was Injured, - A Martin bomber forced down at Smiths Island made an excellent land- ing on the beach, but the inshore engine continued to run through pre- ignition as a result of overheating, and the plane swerved and went sev- eral hundred feet out intc the bay. Lieut. Johnson, driving a Thomas Morse machine, had previously been forced down at this point through lack of gasoline. PLANTOBEAUTIFY AVER PROGRESSES Be Unused Structure Will Torn Down Along Wharf Front. Commisloner Oyster's campalgn to tmprove the appearances of the river front began to bear fruit today, when the wharf committee announced that an unused structure on the wharf at the foot of Sth street southwest will be torn down immediately. The Commissioners also authorized the expenditure of _approximately $1,000 in making repairs to the wharf ' of the fire boat. The wharf committee has decided upon @ policy of removing all un- sightly buildings along the water front as rapidly as the leases under which they are occupied expire. Uniformity Desired. Commissioner Oyster said he real- izes the east side of the channel can- not be made as attractive as the stretch of Potomac Park® which lies on the other side. He believes, how- | ever, that there could be more regu- larity and uniformity in the appear- fance of the wharves and structures whenever they are rebuilt. The municipal fish market, a_well designed brick structure on the water front, stands in striking contrast to the frame warehouses on other wharves that show signs of many vears of service.
