While no mention of the fact was| made at the dinner, it was an inter- esting coincidence that it followed the conference at the White House yesterday afternoon, at which Presi- dent Harding indicated his great in- terest in the development of Alaska and his hope that he might make a trip there late in the summer. Need for Simpler Government. Simplification of the government of Alaska and of its resources de- clared the oustanding need by Gov. Bone and several of the other speakers. Mr. Bone pointed out that at present thirty-elght government bureaus have jurisdiction in_Alaska, and Representative Curry added that one in every five of the population of Alaska was connected with. this gov- ernmental service. As a sidelight on that condition, Mr. Curry humorously remarked there were three kinds of politics in Washington—republican, democratic and bureaucratic. Gov. Bone surveyed, briefly, the natural resources of Alaska in fish, oil, ore, coal, lumber, ete. pointing out that Alaska comprised an area one-fifth=bf the size of the Unitcd States and a coastline of 30,000 miles, and pledged himself to do all in its power to| develop the resources.
