The Corso, from the time of Ro- man emperors the busiest thor- qQghtare of the city, is losing its triumphal arches which once span- ned the street, were destroyed cen- turies ago. Palaces and churches were left, but the palaces are fall- ing before the irrestible demands of commerce. Two huge old palaces occupying a site half-way up the Corso have already gone down before the com- mercial onslaught. In their places have been reared two big, gaudy ANCIENT RUIN! structures to be occupied by banks, which stand out in bold contrast to the quiet coloring of the anejent gems of architecture. - When the palaces are mot torn down,’ they are modified in stch-a way that the interior decoratioh, some of which has stood the test,of Tenturies, sis effaced and sometimes plastéered. Numerous alterations are made to suit the necessities of business. . In the quarter where the Church of St. John Lateran is located, a new amusement §ompany has taken possession of a large square of vacant ground and has erected ¢ar- rousels, roller-coasters, _Ferrls wheels and side shows.
