Denunciation of Admiral Sims' alleged bodied in a resolution unanmiously adopted by the Terence MacSwiney Council of the Amer- f the Irish Republic, meeting at St. Domi- nic Copies were directed to be forwarded to the Secretary of the Navy and the chairman of the naval affairs commit- tees of the Senate and the House. A committee composed of Rev. R. T. Mc- Allister, Michael J. Dflswl]l tT'd George RA.T PHOTO. HAMLIN M. VANDERVOORT. Consideration is being given to the matter of simplifying the procedure and paper work at the pension bu- reau, with a view to expediting claims of thousands of veterans, ac- cording to Hamlin M. Vandervoort, who has just assumed the role of deputy commissioner of pensions. - Two acts recently passed by Con- gress, put a great amount of addi- toinal work on the pension bureau. These particular acts authorized more people to file claims, and had the ef- fect of increasing the pension al- lowances of others. The passage of the law was followed immediately | by a great influx of claims, and the bureau has been working as rapidly as possible to dispose of them with the limited force, accordicg to Mr. Vandervoort. One of these acts, known as the act of May 1, broadened the law reldting to civil war pensions and authorized additional people to file claims, he said. Thousands have taken advan- tage of the authority. The other act, known as the act of June 1, res lated to Spanish war veterans. It gave the veterans of this war a right to a pension on account of service. Heretofore, they were only eligible to receive a pension on ac- count of disability. Thousands of papers also were flled as a result of this act. The force “has made wonderful strides in handling these papers, but the work will be expedited when the new forms of procedure are devel- oped, according to Mr. Vandervoort, who said that he expected to have the plan perfected within a short time. Consideration also is being given by the new deputy commissioner to other changes in the office which also will have the effect of expediting the work and giving the veterans prompt_service, he said. Mr. Vandervoort has been in the pension bureau since 1901, except for the two years previous to his ap- pointment as deputy commissioner, during which time he served as ex- { pert examiner for the House commit- tee on invalid pensions. e _is a ‘native of Freeport, I1l, and is fifty-, three years of age. | | Girls' 6 to 14 Years White Dresses, $1.98 —_— THE STORE FOR THRIFTY PEOPLE — THURSDAY SPECIALS!
