Copyright, 1921, ROME, Italy, June 15.—The an- cient and noble republic of San Marino, much against its will, has been drawn into the current of world events. For the first time in its long career its captains and r@Ff gents have decided to expel politl- cal refugees. The radicals dectare that the world's last stronghold of liberty has capitulated to the fas- cisti_reaction in Romagna. wherein republican San Marino rests like an eagle’s cove. San Marino has caused the expul- sion of a hundred or more refugees. most of them communists, but some who were merely afraid of punish- ment by the Italian fascisti, some really escaping from political per- secution and some probably vuigar criminals_trying to hide their mi: deeds under a political cloak. O hundred and thirty of these re found hospitality in the tin lic, but the Italian fasci tested against being robbed prey and threatened to send tive expedition against the defense- less state. The Italian government desired to extradite certain persons, and the moral pressure that was brought to bear was tremendous. Finally. thé republic consented to the examination and expulsion of the refugees. Here a difficully arose.
