To the Bditor of The Star: i Those who have seen the screen || production “The Inside of the Cup. aiso varipns recent productions por- traying church scenes and characters, | probably realize that the great need || for censorship today is not in abolish- | || ing the scantily c ed st shortening the lo 3 upholding the true Ame: 1l the church as an originator and per- [/ former of good. Censorship should £o deeper than merely eliminating || things appealing to the senses, but should purify the thoughts that come to the mind and lessen respect for what every one believes to be our best_influence. the church. While it is true the human element with its mistakes enters into the church also, it is equally true that it enters into the home, business and pleasure. Yet who would denounce motherhood and the home in general because a_few, nay, many. do not perform their duty,” or who would condemn business because some do not conduct it honestly or pleasures, |, because some abuse them? There are three factors which every right- thinking American knows work for the good of their community—their || homes, work and church. These, to- gether with simple pleasures, con- || stitute our being and are what we endeavor to bring up to the highest standards. Therefore, it does not seem reverent, or .even honest, for screen productions to lower our re- spect for the church by portraying only hypocrites and smug Pharisees in three or four acts, and then en- deavor to abolish the impression re- ceived by the reformation of one character, or a sermon by the min- ister, or some heroic deed. Whether there are hypocrites in it, as else- where, the church, together with the home, is the very foundation of our country. Not the garments -of the star, nor the kisses, need strict censoring—these things are forgotten || immediately upon leaving the theater | || —but the purification of the ideas ¢hat | | reach the American people through the screen and the uplifting of their | ideals need considerable thought and attention. L. MELANDER. State Names and Divisions. To the Editor of The Star: I was much interested in an edi- torial recently printed in The Star relative to the division of certain states into two soversignties each. ||| I have seen it stated that instead of | || North and South Dakota, one wanted 10 be named “Roosevelt™ Thers are ||| 00 many zood names which could be | ill| given states to make It necessary, in any way. to duplicate.
