THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. D. C. MONDAY. MAY 16. 1921. For Ourselves We Say ‘“No”’—Read Carefully and Find Out “Why Not™ || Who is responsible for present-day retail prices? And are these prices justified by present-day conditions? That seems to be the bone of contention on the part of all con- cerned. No doubt you have noticed newspaper reports of various charges, counter charges and of conferences held or to be held by retailers with government officials on this very interesting subject. The principal contention and accusation seems tobe that every one from the producer down, but NOT INCLUD- ING THE RETAILER, have readjusted or have been readjusted. In merchandising, buying is one important factor, and the seller who refused to readjust voluntarily was quickly left without business; the buyer looked to that. It’s the answer to quick price reductions in any stage of business. W hat the bewildered consumer in our opinion wants is facts and figures and nothing else. We refuse to be the “GOAT” and in our behalf, and speaking for our own business only, we are publishing this advertisement. We present here, in this advertisement, figures which should cnable any one to quickly judge whether or not our retail prices have been readjusted to conform to present-day values in primary markets. Prices quoted as of today mean that you can buy in any one of our stores the items mentioned, at the prices quoted. When this is possible, it seems that scant attention is due to complaints that higher prices than these are charged in Washington. About the Merchandise We selected, as you will note in the table opposite, thirty - three items of general use in the average household. No doubt you will admit that a purchase of this quantity of merchandise will go a long ways in feeding a hungry family. While we list here only thirty-three items, investigation will show that practically all items in our line which soared to high points during war time have now receded in price in about the same proportion as those mentioned in this list.
