BY DICK SMITH. @pecial Dispatch to The Star. KANSAS CITY, April 14.— Wheat growers have gone back into history for a solution of their financial dif- ficulties. They propose to pay har- vest hands in grain instead of money this year. Three bushels of wheat, market value approximately 33, and found for a day's work is their pay. Many farmers are carrying last year's crop rather than sell at less than the cost of production. Conse- quently, they have never repaid their banks the money borrowed to harvest it. This will make it difficult to finance the harvesting of the coming crop and has resulted in the sugges- tion that ha hands be emploved on a share basis Prospects of Bumper Crop. Prospects of a crop even larger than that of last year have decreased prices, but have failed to cause growers to release the 1920 carry-over. As a re- sult, elevator stocks are depleted and the reserve suppiy is principally on the farms. The farmers are encour- aged in this bit of the plans for a co- operative marketinz system through | who which they hope to control not only | the price of the coming crop, but that | held over from last year. Under the superv: of the Kansas state board of agriculture conferences are being held to determine wage scales for harvest hands in various ! It has been de- sections of the state: i the appeal is a strong one. cided that wages will be considerably under those of the past few years. The unemployment in = industry causes the farmers to believe that they will have no difficulty in getting farm labor on their own terms. BUSINESS NOTES. NEW YORK, April 14—A decided feature of the wholesale market to- day is the “bargain hunting” of some of the largest retailers of the coun- try. Buyers are in the city from every section, and some of them plainly state that they are here to buy only at “a price.” Some of them have resorted to placing large ad- vertisements in the trade papers of- fering to buy certain lines of goods if the price should be made satis- factory. These ads, it is declared. have received hearty response, and as a result large stocks have changed hands during the last few days. Wallpaper houses are just starting a heavy advertising program and be- lleve that the time Is ripe to suggest to home-owners the advisability of freshening up a bit. Page ads today announce the spring lines of the larg- est wallpaper house in the world, and The wall- paper industry was dealt & hard blow by the war, and the cessation of build- ing after the war because of high prices. The fancy crops do not bring over 20 cents pound, while mediocre crops are selling as low as 10 cents. Poor crops are way below that figure. There is great deal of very poor tobacco that would hardly sell for over a cent or two a pound, and it would pay the farmer to use it as a fertilizer rather than sell at such low figures. It is estimated that there are fully 12,000,- 000 pounds of very poor tobocca un- sold yet in Lancaster and Chester counties.
