Society In its most Brilllant phase appeared at the Chinese ball at Ward- man Park Hotel last night for the benefit of the Chinese famine fund. There was a hodge-podge of the truly oriental combined with the fashion- able foibles of the western world. Women in elaborate Chinese dress hobbled about on French-heeled shoes, while other extremes in the costum- ing brought many good laughs. There | were seeresses. philosophers, priests, merchants and what not. and most attractive of all was the Chinese wed- ding. with Miss Adelaide Oxnard as the bride, clad in the most costly raiment and carried in a red and gold chair. The ballroom was hung with pan- els of costly Chinese embroidery, some of the pieces being loaned from famous collections and very rare, members chants, Wedding Partv Circles Ballroom. The wedding procession twice encir- ing the baliroom, the two splendid rs in which the bride and match- ker, Miss Adelaide Oxnard and Mrs. itten were carried, and the ns playing their native ic on ruments sirange to the :ident, with Chinese men bringing up rear, each carrying his burden of for the bride, formed a brilliant ure long to be remembered. The wedding ceremony and the auction which followed caused a perfect rush to the center of the ballroom, where a_very few—only the first line of the circle— were permitted a view. Chinese black art and the subtle magic of the orient was told by native artists along_their special lines; dain- ties from China were displaved tempt- ingly, and later a supper was served that was particularly American. One of the striking features of the ball was the number of orientals inl jn"g American costume, several of the wives of rose pink silk, brocaded in flower design. in the same shade, had bands | of exquisite embroldery bordering the mandarin coat, and her headdress was {a glittering mass of beads, gold em- | broidery ana flowers.
