Mr. Haviland was' a descendant of Theodore Havi- land, an American, who came to France and established the firm of porcelain manufacturers bearing his| name. The American origin of the firm served it well fifteen years ago, when Limoges was in the throes of a great strike. Mr. Haviland, who served in a consular capacity for the American government, flew the American flag over his factory when the mob became menacing, and as a_consequence the factory was undisturbed.
