C, MARCH 20, S LRSS White House Hospitality Society’s Leading Feature Since the Fourth of March tAmbassador and Mme. Jusserand Hosts to E\Secretary and Mrs. Hughes—Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge to Entertain Diplomats. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. OT in years, if ever before, has an administration started off with N such a sprightly air, the White House fairly humming with t hospitality since noon day on March 4. Scarcely more than two wéeks have passed, and yet the President and Mrs. Harding have ful- filféd many important social obligations, such as receiving the diplomatic cokps, the wives of justices of the Supreme Court, men and women of official society generally, and laying ropes for one of the most elaborate sotial programs Washington has known in years. < E reception to the diplomats in the White House Thursday was a stately and beautiful function, quite in contrast to the domestic air which surrounds the tea in the red room the afternoon preceding it, when the wives of the#§8preme-Court justices were received. For Mrs. Harding it was a fitst meeting'in most instances, but Miss Haglan, who présided at the tea table, was quite at home with the guests, several of whom had served in the stately position of Supseme Court hostesses with her mather, the late Mrs. Jchn M. Harlan: ‘e E dinner at the French embassy, with the ambassador and Mme. Jusserand as hosts and the Secretary of State and Mrs. Hughes as guests of homor, was another official entertainment of great importance, and was equally brilliant with the dinner which Mr. and Mrs. Larz Adderson gave for the Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge. Then there Were various entertainments for Mrs. Coolidge in the way of luncheons and teas. The ambassador of Chile and Mme. Mathieu, the Brazilian ambassador, the Cuban minister and Mme. de Cespedes and the minister of‘Serbia and Mme. Grouitch were among the many diplomats entertain- ing during the week 'l‘HE recéption which the Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge will give tomorrow afternoon for the diplomatic corps fulfills a social tra- dition of generations standing. Before the corps grew to such imposing 46 the Vice Presidents and their wives invited many officials to meet | the foreigners, but that is impossible now, and it is a with grim bit of | huinor that one recalls the rather unsightly diplomatic reception held by the Vice President, the late James S. Sherman and Mrs. Sherman, which proved such a jam of distinguished humanity that diplomats had to leave thiir overcoats and hats outside with the police or with their footmen, while they went in to pay their respects. The Vice President and Mrs. Marshall obviated such a trouble by entertaining the corps alone. RS. HARDING and Mrs. Coolidge have each given their names as patronesses for the brilliant Chinese ball, April 2, to benéfit the China famine fund, when if the highly spectacular program is carried out an- other scintilating feature will be left to brighten the pages of Washing- ton’s social history. Mrs. Harding has also become a member of the ‘board of the Ladies’ Aid Society of the Garfield Memorial Hospital, w Mis. Coolidge is ng much attention to college women’s affairs. Sire will be the guest of honor at the banquet to be given by the College Women's Club, April 5, and Thursday she will attend the Alumnae of the University of Vermont, when Mrs. George S. Smallwood entertains at a reception. B EDNESDAY cve r Mrs. John B. Henderson will entertain at one ghtful ve of her de arian dinners in honor of the Vice President and Mrs. C {ge, but. like all of the other dinners of the week, while important socially. it will be a very quiet affair.
