These advices helped to unsettie the tone of the market, which turned very weak under Hquida- tion by recent buyers and continued southern selling. There was southwestern selling later. but the market steadied on cov- ering promoted by reports of a bet- ter tone in the stock market and for- eign exchan May sold up from 11.12 to 11.36 and July from 1155 to 1177 or about 20 to 24 points from the lowest NEW ORLEA favorable tone March 2—The un- foreign political news and a lower Liverpool market than due put the price of cotton lower on the opening here today. FOREIGN ISSUES ARE AGAIN LOWER NEW YORK, March 2.—Liquidation of foreign government bonds was again the ket today. Belgian 8 broke 87 for the first time. French 8s were un- changed, but Danish municipals were weak at 96. The United Kingdom bonds, which had held up against the downward tendency, at length gave the 5%s of 1937 losing a point It was a question how far this heaviness in the government sec- | tion was due to the developments in j the London conference. The selling. although it resulted in {new low prices for some of these Is- sues, was not sufficiently large to be- token very serious concern. Still the market for foreign governments un- doubtedly had the thought of a cam- paign into Germany, which would pile up another load of debt. Liberty bonds, continuing yester- day's_tendency, went slightly higher. | The first test in a week of the mar- ket for new issues wus afforded by the offering of the $10,000,000 S0 Paulo bonds. These bonds were put out at 97%, to yield a little less than 81 per cent. They were first quoted in ‘the market today, offered at 971%, with 97 the best bid, but in the afternoon they were better with the bid price raised to the subscription figure of 97%. The bonds, while they were being quietly taken were not going with amy great lacrity. The check which had come over the general bond list during the iast few weeks, has made the inves ing public much less keen about rush- ing in to buy new issues. Raillway Issue Irregular. Railway bonds wera irregular, but with few changes of consequence. As a rule, where prices varied at all, they went down. Southern Rallway 43 were off a point to 57 on larse dealings. while the 55 lost a half point to $3%. The decline of the Southern Railway group evidently was a reflection of the demoralized condition in the cotton trade. Bur- lington joint 4 ere a shade better at 97%. New York Central 7s dipped below 101, and New York, West- chester and Boston 48 at 37 were off a point on the day, and five points beneath their recent high.
