Sugars, Asphalt and Pennsy Were Especially Weak Spots—Exchange Easier. BY STUART D.WEST. NEW YORK, Marcy Z—What re- sponse the financial markets made today to the London news was per- functory altogether “trivi Sterling exchange opencd dow tle over a cent in the pound, canceling vesterday’s gain. Conti- nental rates were slightly lower, both and 1 1 ereh francs and marks doing the same us sterling—losing _the ad of the previous day. But even this moder- ate recession was followed by a par- tial recovery, thus rendering the net changes quite inconsiderable. Small as was the reaction of the exchange market to the apparent deadlock on the German reparations question, the stock market manifestad less inter- est still. It started in about where it left off last night, moved with some irregularity for the first hour or so, while fresh rating of various indi- vidual stocks was in progress, amd then in the afternoon turned upward. The indications were that the short selling which has been woing on for the last week had been overdone, cer tainly in many directions. Where ticular stocks were weak it wa. reasons peculiar to themselves. Sugars in Decline. Beet Sugar broke rather i diy talk that the dividend would cut perhaps to 5 per cent. This led to some sympathetic decline in the other sugar stocks. The errati neral Asphalt was driven down & na Ttah Copper was pressed for anticipation of a redu dividend at_ tomorrow This action has been f for some time, and mor ¢ since the heavy deficit disclosed in the report for the December quarter and for the year. It i St moi certain after the p 3 of the dividend on Kennecoft ¢ which, through its large holdings Utah, would naturally take its from what the tors pose to do. Pennsy Under Fir There was further heavy selling of Pennsylvania, which. if it did not re- flect very positive uneasiness over the pro- | dividend, at least, med to mean that the poor showing of the road last year had induced a certain amount switching of investment holding: from Pennsylvania into other stocks. The Hill shares, after a further sm i decline, developed a better tone, this no doubt representing more sober judg- ment regarding the situation created by the refusal of the Interstate Com- merce Commission to adopt the new Burlington financial plan, that there would be no difficulty ultimately in putting through an operation refund- ing the $215,000,000 collateral bonds.
