I Caleorma \y Eer *Tis winter in this pleasant land, where I have pitched my moving tent, but goods like saow and sleet are banned, and frosts don’t function worth a cent. Yet fogs come drifting from the deep and morns and eves are often cold, and shivers ‘through your system creep, and all the air seems damp withj mold. And then you'd like to build a fire, a good old-fashioned roaring blaze, such as all mortal scouts desire, on cold and clam- my winter days. But here, where all the prospects please, and only profiteers are vile, you'll have to sit around and freeze—no man can own a cordwood pile. ‘We buy our wood in little sacks | which from some distant forests came; with chunks the size of carpet tacks we feed the sad and ghastly flame. Our coal we urchase by the quart, and burn- i mg it seems quite a crime; no| fire can roar and rip and snortl when fed a pellet at a time. The fog enshrouds this winter night, it pierces through me like a sword lantern’s burning as | 1 write—it’s all the heat 1 canj afford. But there are countless | sunny days when everything is fine and grand, and then I take my lyre and praise the glories of this wondrous land. Workmen already have started to beautify the grounds after elaborate ideas worked out by the best experts in the employ of the government. | These plans have been made known ; to Mrs. Harding and have met vmhl enthusiastic approval. Within the past fex days more | than 5,000 pansy plants of various golors and species have been planted | in_the north and south grounds. Be- | gides these, many tulips have been | planted to the north of the execu- tive offices and directly in front of the White House. T%e rose gardens | will be made larger and, if possible, i more beautiful. When the gardens #re completed it is expected that the ‘White House collection of roses will gurpass any similar group in_the east. if not the entire country. Both President-elect and Mrs. Harding are K¥nown to be especially fond of flow- ers and, because of this and the in- timation that Mrs. Harding expects fo hold a series of lawn parties in the summer. the public buildings and grounds office has planned accord- ingly. | __*— i [ Order Your Flora1 V. lxp‘ of §Il'fler 900 14th.
