These watch- ers consumed a total of 3,043 hours of time in their work, and an analysis 1of their reports shows that during the month 8.7 per cent of all automobilists driving over grade crossings failed to observe proper caution in approach- ing the crossings. The Pennsylvania railroad's cam- paign to reduce the number of grade crossing accidents began in July and has been conducted in co-operation ith Lewis S. Sadler, commissioner of highways of Pennsyivania, and W. L. Dill, commiasioner of motor vehicles of New Jersey. When a watcher notes a case of careless driving at a grade crossing he writes down the number of the car on a card, which is for- warded to the proper official of the state where the license was issued. Careless Motorists Warned. This latter official gets the name of the owner of the car from his records and forwards a warning to him, giv- ing the date, time and place of his offense. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR THE AUTOMOBILISTS Answers to Last Week's Questions. 1. A spark will not jump as great a distance between the spark plus points under compression within the cylinder as it will outside of the en- gine because the compressed air and gas mixture form a better insulator to electricity than _exterior at- mosphere. Therefore, more voltage is required to penetrate compression, and a closer setting of the points is necessary within the cylindr. The average temperature Within an _ automobile engine, with cooling and lubricating systems functioning properly, is about 950 degrees. At the beginning of power stroke, explosion occurs in each temperature is about 2,700 degrees, and the temperature at suction stroke, the coolest period of the cycle is about 250 degrees. To withstand these various high temperatures it can be easily seen that a good quality of oil is necessary in_the engine. 3. One way of telling if one or more cylinders aro consuming too much oil is to watch the exhaust pipe as the engine is in operation. If smoke comes from the pipe steadily all cylinders are receiving the same amount of ofl, but if the smoke issues irregularly in puffs there is a possibility that some cylinders are being lubricated more than others. A constant stream of smoke may indi- cate too much oil in all cylinder: 4. The basis of power which a gaso- line engine has is usually figured at eighty to a hundred pounds per square inch, which is considered to exist dur- ing ‘the full length of power stroke of each piston. 5. In _most automobile engines the exhaust and inlet valves are both the same size, therefore from size alone you cannot tell one from the other. But you can tell them apart by ob- serving when they open and close. The inlet begins to open immediately upon the full closing of the exhaust, but there is a period of time between the closing of the inlet and the open- ing of the exhaust. 6. Alcohol is obtained from a vege- table source, and contains 7 or more per cent of water. It can be made from substances containing starch or sugar, and it is also a product of fruits, grain, vegetables, wheat, rye, corn, 'sugar cane, barley and rice. Alcohol requires considerable heat to properly vaporize it, and therefore is used almost entirely as an anti-freeze solution only in the automobile en- gine. 7. It a_storage battery were dis- charged faster than the specified rate the plates would tend to warp and active material on them would be Joosened from the surface, forming considerable sediment in the bottom of the battery jar.
