LAND. factors very trul ot THE SHORTEST WAR. A British Campaign Begun and Ended in Une Day, From London Mail. A campaign, involving the employment of ™muny thousands of men and the fighting of two sanguinary pitched battles, was once besun and ended on the same day. The y of this unique achievement belongs to British arms. In 1843 things bore a Wreatening aspect in the Central Indian State of Gwalior, inhabited by the Mahrat- tas. considered the most formidable war- ricrs we had up to then encountered in our Indian wars. Intelligence reached the British authori- ties that the magnificent Mahratta army of 80,000 infantry, 10,000 cavalry and 200 guns gontemplated not only a military depotism, but an active alliance with their neighbors of the Punjab, in the event of which British Influence might be threatened by a com. Bined Sikh and Mahratta army, of 15,009 men with 500 guns. According! 48 a precautionary measure, Lord Ellen. borough ordered the assembly of an army gf exercise on the Gwalfor frontier. This force was divided into two portions; on the northern boundary Sir Hugh Gough com- manded 12,000 men and forty field pleces: on the eastern was stationed General Grey with 4,000 infantry and a few batteries of horse artillery. The concentration took place In Novem- ber, 1833, and it had the effect of bringing the nutive authorities to their senses, but the . eee eseccooocore EXTREME EXERTION In all cases where the body is called upon for great exertion —when the physical powers are exerted fo their utmost—the nerves strung to their highest tension—it is then that Johann Hoff’s Malt Extract proves its value as a strength-giver. It makes new blood, nourishes the nerves, strengthens the system. JOHANN HOFP’S : Peersereceeeeceseoe® MALT EXTRACT brings good appetite and a per- fect digestion. DR. W. N. Fin- ally, it was decided that nothing short of a British occupation of the capital, Gwalior, could put a stop to the unsatisfactory state of affairs prevailing, so on December 17 both Gough's and Grey's forces crossed the frontier for this purpose. No one suspected that there would be any fighting, the na- tive government was known to be peace- fully inclined and the contingency of the Mahratta army revolting, to oppose the British advance on its own account, was quite overlooked. But no sooner had the two British columns commenced their march than the Mahrattas declared their rulers traitors, and hastened to take up defensive positions. Gough appears to have entirely discredited the warnings that reached him, for he left his siege train be- hind Agra and allowed his wife, and the wives of many other officers, to accom- pany the column, riding on clephants at Its ead. At daybreak on December 26 his troops commenced the passage of the Kohari river in leisurely fashion. A halt was called for breakfast, and immediately on the re- sumption of the march everybody wi startled by hearing a heavy gun fired from the woods fringing a litde village, named Maharajpore, and following the report a spent cannon ball rolled between the legs of Lady Gough’s elephant. Within another few minutes the woods beeame lined with flame from the mouths of 175 pieces, as they discharged with terrible accura a rm of shot and shell into the British anks, The surprise was complete. The ladies were hurried to the rear, and a council of war was summoned. The battle, which ensued raged for three hours, and the fighting was of a most desperate char. acter. By midday, however, the victory Was ours, the Mahrattas fleeing from the field and leaving behind them 3.000 killed and wounded and 15% guns. Cakes Pass Through Many Hands Be- fore They Are Delivered. From the Nashua (N. II.) Telegraph. The cutting of the ice on a pend fs an interesting process, and the equipment is pecul and varied. All the fall and win- ter, until the harvest ts closed, men and horses, after every snow storm, scraps the ice to the glare with snow scrapers. When the cutting begins a horse draws a marker a that portion of the pond imme- diately to be cut, leaving a light straight Incision along the surface. This is repeated vntil the surface is all marked off one way, sach line being twenty-four inches apart. Then the groover goes over the same course. making the in m deeper and bro ress Is repeated. exe mark goes at right angles to the drawn first, and at a distance of ix inches apart. ‘Then the course ts kone over by the plows, until the lines cach ¥ are cut ty a depth of nine inches. Every cake, before tt goes into the store room, has be- tween two or three Inches planed from its surface. A machine also grooves the planed surface with inch-deep creases back- ward and forward, to prevent freezing to- gether when finally packed away in the rooms. ‘The “planer man’ has his hands full, and after leaving him a break in the elevator run sends it flying along the house gal- leries to the room where {t is to be stored away. Practiced men with pikes hurry it on its way, each room has its turn, and Uer after Uer is piled up untii the fce can be more conveniently handled should the ice enter the room at a higher point. The break in the runway closed, {t only remains to open another on a level with the next gallery to fll the rooms from that point, where the cakes remain until wanted. +e.
