Air in Motion. “In cases interesting the architect, cer- tain impulses put air, an elastic medium, in a fast, vibrating motion. Abstractly considered, this motion is propagated on the surface of a gradually expanding sphere. When reaching our ears, it is transferred by the auditory nerve to our brain and recorded as sound. When it meeets the obstruction of a rigid body, the elasticity of the air causes it to rebound, it is reflected, integral parts of the vibrating motion are, by a mathematical abstraction, considered as rays on which the motion may be easily illustrated; they, however, merely express the direction of the power, with which the molecules of the air press forward in the vibratory motion. “The theory of the echo is developed fiom th2 law of reflection.
