The rats of this city met Inst night in the Ooera Heure, where, for a period of dem ever two hours, prominent’ party leaders delivered speeches upon current poiitical questions. Prof. Dunn's Brass Ban enti ened the occasion by a series of popu airs, The assemblage was distinctly dem ocratic. The name of Bryan, whenever mentioned, was loudly cheered, and ever: assertion that free silver would be the amount issue of democracy in 1900, with the party unaer Mr. Bryan's leadership. met with enthrslastic applause. He spoke of the stupendous results that had teen achieved in the las: two ye rs—the treaty of annexation with Hawaii and the war, which in a few months had been fought to a successful issue—and declared the belief that a part, if not all, of the recently conquered Spanish territory in the West Indies would of its own voli- tion and request soon become a part of this ntry. “The question of the P! is one that involves great interest and con- cern,” the speaker declared. “They are 8.000 miles from our shores and in another hemisphere. In speaking of the war Mr. Rix, aid it would © been averted if the democratic advice to recognize the Cubans as belligerents had been followed. At the mention . Joe Wheeler's name there was much uding. The speaker charged the republican party with being responsible for the wretched of affairs in the volunteer army. The ariff bill and meome tax were scored. Mr. Rixey dwelt at length upon the Gage cur- rency bill, which he condemned in the most scathing terms, and concluded by prodicting or Bryan and democracy in 1900. Views of Other Speakers. Mr. J. F. McCormick Selected to Rep- resent the Central Labor Union— Sketch of His Career. The American Federation of Labor will hold its annual convention this year in Kansas City, Mo., and its discussions of the important questions coming before it will occupy ten days. The program has not been d yet, but it will include consideration of the eight-hour law and of the most appropriate measures to be taken ‘by which a better understanding can be reached between laboring men and those who employ them, It is also understood that considerable attention will be given to certain propositions which contain new ideas on the formation and management of sporative associations, wherein those who do the work not only receive wages, but also secure the benefits of the profits arising from the products which result therefrom. It is probable that the delegate from the Centrai Labor Union of this efty, whieh comprises twenty-two labor organizations, including the printers, bookbinders and Delegate McCormick. other lines of skilled mechanics, will take prominent part in the discussions and de- liberations. He is Mr. J. F. McCormick, a compositor employed in the government printing cffice, who has gained much prom- inence for his wise and conservative views on questions affecting labor. He recently illustrated his characteristics in this direction in the report which he drew up as chairman of the Central Labor Union committee created to investigate the charges made against Representative Bal cock, the chairman of the District commit- tee of the riouse and of the republican con- gressional committee. This report was re- cently published in full in The Evening Star, and has been widely and favorably commented upon for its. fairness and the soundness of its logical conclusions. Mr. MeCormick is a native of Mississippi, having been born in Meridian thirty-three years ago, and has had a wide experience in newspaper work all over the country.
