He intended to serve in the Austrian arm their dislike made life there intoler him. He appears to be quite happy and nt, althoush his father allows him but $4.10 per year. Not so very long ago Don Jaime donned the of a gray wig and Spanish cloak and traveled all through Spai In veral places he aroused the suspi-ions of the police. On one occasion {n*Madrid he came face to face with the you i mother, a situation which it re- quired great presence of mind and covl- hess to face without detection. When Don Jaime heard of his sister's elopement with Count Folchi. a penniless rtist, a cripple, and a married man, be obtained leave of nee from his regi- Ment and went to the Spanish trontier, hoping to catch the couple on taeir way te France, and to kill the count; but he s- ed them and they still live to repent their hasty action. Don Cartos was natur very much cut up over this eseapad Donna Elvira's. He addressed x commu n to his follow ng that vghter was “de and a@sk- ing them to pray for ‘able soul. He we d have not fo with her, notwithstanding Donna Elvira wrote to him from Barcelona imploring his par: and making excu for her conduct y saying that, since his second marriage, she had found life intolerable with her stepmoth-r, the duchess. Neither this let- ter nor the fact that the wife of Count Fillippo Folchi had obtained a divorce, so that the count was now free to marry his daughter, had any effect upon Don Carlos, he had buried his daughter and would not have her resurrecte long since the adherents of Philip, Duke of Orleans, celebrated his thirty-fifth birthday by a s of thanksgiving for the birth of “the king.” as they are pleased to call him. According to a chronicler the climax of the affair was reached at the chureh when “Princess” Marguerite, and the Duchess of Maarid, wife of Don Carlos, the “Infanta Don Jaime,” Don Carlos in PALACE IN VENICE. often seen bathing on the Ledo, and going and down the canal in a penny boat in a most democratic manner. In their gon- dcia he and the duchess seem aimost lover- like, both sitting under the shade of the duchess’ parasol. Notwithstending tlis apparent demo- cratic simplicity, they exact from their friends and acquaintz1ces courtly komage when they “receive.” The duchess’ royal hend is extended to be kissed, and her ménner couid not be mcre ceremonious !f » were reigning Queen of Spain. Perhaps is practicing that she may be able to receive in good form when she does come to the throne—if she ¢ver does. Jealous of Her Position. It is said that the cuchess is jealous of ker position and will have no one forget it. Scme of the Venetians whose pleasure it 1s to cali upoa her object to being reminded of their remissness when, for some reason, they heve not gene as often as her court etiquette desaands. When Sir Henry Laird settled in Venice he and Lady Laird left cards for Don Carlos and the duchess at Lotedaa Paiace. What was their surpris+ to have their cards returned to them wita a message to the effect that people calling upon royalty wrote their names in the vis- itors’ book, and cid not leave cards as they would when calling upon ordinary people. When Don Carlos and the duchess were in Bgypt a few years ago they went about “seeing the sights” like other tourists, with nothing to ‘uark their state except the khe- divai carriage and the two gaily dressed royal uniform, Bianco, followed grande tenue, de Strade, I: the “Infanta” Donna by “the court, “en marshaled by the Duchess dy of honor to the “queen, came‘in. In their train followed the Prince de Lysle and half a dozen Spanish dukes and marquises. The ladies present were especially interested in the fashionable de- parture of the Spanish court, which, for the first time, introduced the mantilla, all the ladies entering with folds of rich lace hanging from their heads over their gor- geous costumes. ‘The men were decorated with boutonnieres made of lies of the val- ley, surrounded by green, while the altar itself was a mass of fleur de Is, the Bour- bon floral emblem of royalty. The church was filled with a demure and respectful throng, whether of royalists-or not it would be impossible to say, as curiosity always draws a French crowd together, whether for the empire, the republic, the kingdom or what not. Immensely Wealthy. Don Carlos is immensely wealthy, and with increasing fortune he has grown ava- ricious. It is sald that his household ex- penses are conducted on an economic scale that would do credit to a miser. With all nis faults, he is as good a man, and in many respects a better one, than the majority of royal personages. He is a brave and courageous soldier, daring to rashness. He ts a fine horseman, and can, when he pleases, effectively assume that air of divinity which is supposed to be about a king. SUMMER RESORTS. SUMMER RESORTS. ;UMMER RESORTS.
