Beason Why Many | Streets Are Not Swept Oftener. “Referring to complaints of citizens to the effect that their streets are not given prop- er attention, Mr. Warner Stutler, the super- intendent of street cleaning, said to a Star reporter today that he felt it proper that some explanation should be given, in order that his office and inspectors, who are, he said, attentive to duty, might not be blamed unjustly. - “I have on fil said Mr. Stutler, “in this office numerous requests from citizens asking that their streets be swept oftener, and I regret very much that they cannot be complied with on account of limited ap- Propriation. I am framk.to admit that the service is not what it should be, and that the citizens have just cause for complaint, but I assure you.that we are doing the very best we can with the money at our disposal. Under ‘the present schedule a number of improved streets are, swept only once a week, improved alleys once a week and un- improved streets once in ten or fifteen days. In making up my schedules for the next year I hope to be able to clean all streets at least twice per week, but this will de- pee entirely on the increase in appropria- n. “In the pending District appropriation bill, now in conference, there is an increase of $25, 000 in the amount set apart for clean- ing the streets. I hope it will go through. If it does I will then be able to reduce to a minimum the complaints now being made.
