BATTLE ROYAL BETWEEN SYSTEMS ee Annual Election of the Atlantic Association. IN THE LOCAL CLUBS After all its migratory movements the A. W. L. trophy rests in the handsome rooms of the Walbrook Club, having been wrested from Philadelphia after one of the most exciting matches on record. This was a battle royal between the American leads of Philadelphia and the trump- showing leads of the Walbrooks. Both teams being thoroughly familiar with each other's style of play, there was no ad- vantage on either side. The hands fur- nished some beautiful positions, and on several there would have been heavy gains for Walbrook, had it not been for the timidity and conservative piay of one of that team, who otherwise played bril- liantly throughout the match. After the first eignt frames, Philudelphia (with one exception, the first four frames after din- ner) was unable to stem the tide, and the gains, though slow, were all in the Walbrooks’ favor. Though they consumed considerable time, which was always one of the characteris- tics of the Walbrooks, yet Philadelphia on several: occasions followed their example. Once Watson took six minutes over a difficult finesse, and once Work took near- ly eight minutes to decide about a finesse. Fourth hand had trumped with 8 and 10 of trumps; second hand had had the over trump once, and was stopped by Work’s partner holding the trick with king of trumps. He led small trump. Work with A and jack did not know if queen was un- guarded in the fourth hand or not. He played the A, and caught the queen. On board 45 Dr. Smith made a brilliant trump lead, holding J and spot. His part- ner unblocked beautifully his diamond suit playing queen on his ace led. They netted three tricks on the hand. The Philadelphias’ won the smallest number of tricks that they ever won against any adversary. They were warm in the praise they gave the Walbrooks, and like true sportsmen, admitted they were fairly beaten. The score was Wal- brook, 20; Philadelphia, 13. The last three or four beards the Philadelphieas took a few chances, but whether it was the fair Mascot, the beautiful bride of the Wal- brcok’s captain, who accompanied the team to Philadelphia or the indomitable determination of the four to win, it did not change the result. The Walbrook team was Prof. W. F. Smith, Dr. W. F. Smith, B. W. Smith and J. L. Sellman. The Philadelphia team comprised C. W. Hill, M. C. Work, F. P. Mogridge and W. H. Watson. Referee, Mr. A. E. Taylor of Brooklyn. The next match will be at Walbrook. The strong Albanys will meet the hold- ers next Saturday. Reinforced by C. D. P. Hamilton, the well known author, who is playing brilliant whist, the Albany will be as hard to defeat as the Philadelphia‘s, and the cup may take a visit to New York's capital. The Atlantics. The annual meeting of the Atlantic Whist Association was held Saturday morning at the Philadelphia Whist Club, Philadelphia. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President, Joseph S. Neff of Philadelphia; first vice president, Thomas A. Whelan of Baltimore: second vice president, C. D. P. Hamilton of Easton: treasurer, Gustavus Remak, jr., of Philadelphia; recording secretary, |. Andrews, jr., of Philadelphia; correspond- b> Qo Tey lamp globes reduced. AlL-linen In a recent paper on “Some Climatic Fea- tures of the Arid Region,” by Mr. Moore, chief of the United States weather bureau, the opinion is expressed that the ideal cli- mate, as regards equality of temperature and absence of moisture, does not exist in the United States. Such a climate, he says, 1s found only on the plateaus of the tropics, as, for example, at Santa Fe de Bogota, in Colombia, where the average annual tem- perature is about 50 degrees; but the south- eastern part of the United States has the nearest approach to this ideal temperature, for even in the southwest the range of va- tiation is too great, and the rainfall reach- es from nothing to a point greater than is to be found in the eastern or middle states. A strong line of Bath Robes at $7 and $10—next we get will be sold at an ad- vance of from $2 to $3—so our importer tells us. Ranges “of temperature, Mr. Moore re- marks, depend upon the dryness and clear- ness of the sky, and thus it is that, while the summer temperature of the great southwest is high, the real degree of heat as felt by animal life is not indicated by the common thermometer, but by a mer- |curial therriometer, the bulb of which is wet at the time of the observation—in this manner being shown the temperature of evaporation, the sensible temperature, and, more nearly than can otherwise be indi- cated, the actual heat of the body. The in- land valleys and plains east of the Rocky mountain foothills have an average sum- mer temperature of from 65 degrees on the north to 80 degrees on the gulf coast; while the daytime heat in the aria seems excessive, it is not really so, owing to the extreme dryness of, the atmosphere — in these regions, too, the radiation at night is so great that the temperature is made tolerable, and, indeed, comfortable. as well as New Jersey, where contests are being played weekly, and handsome prizes are offered. In the Local Clubs. The Saturday night handicap of the C. Bi. C. was interfered with on account of the smoker, but team plays have been continuous during the week, as at the C. A. C., were slightly on the wane on ac- count of other attractions at the club. The renewed interest at the W. C. and Whist Club argves well for the serio chess players who like an occasional con- test at whist as a relaxation. There are no five or seven minutes’ delay and the cards drop faster than the moves at the chess tables. The Cosmos has a strong whist con- tingent, and many of the members play whist in championrhip form, though they do not use all the frills of the different clubs throughout the league. The Army and Navy Club has some strong whist players, and many pairs and teams of fours would make a good show- ing against teams with the reputation of bemg first-class players. Since the Union League of both New York and Philadelphia have whist teams and enter into contests with their differ- ent cities it 1s often a cause of remark why Washington's famous clubs do not take up the game seriously. There are scores of good whist players in the House of Representatives. Representative Han- dy of Delaware is rot only a brilliant chess player, but is good at whist. Representa- tive Elliott of North Carolina has fre- quently demorstrated his ability to play good whist. Representative Talbot is as good a partner as any one wants to face. Colonel Berry of Kentucky plays a strong game, and Senators Gallinger, McMillan, Wolcott and Frye are as strong a quartet of whist players as one wants to encount- er, while Senator Hawley plays a com- mon-sense game with marked ability. Among the women players of the city there is great interest taken in whist cir- cles, and the Wednesday events at Phila- delphia are watched with much attention. Saturday at Philadelphia the Atlantic Auniliary will defend the trophy it won frem the New Jerseys. The New Eng- landers are the challengers. The number wili be Mmited, as the N. E. will send only sixteen, whe will be selected from their strongest players. To meet them the Atlantic must choose her men with care, as it will be a closely contended match. New England has had considerable prac- tice in local centests, and the members are in the best condition. Lot Ensey, onc of the Baltimore players, made his initial play with the talent and showed conclu- sively that he was a player of marked ability, and though playing whist only about a year showed wonderful knowledge of the game, having trained with the vic- torious Walbrooks. ed A NAPOLEON RELIC, Ivory Powder Flask Once Owned by the French Emperor. From the New York Herald. An ivory powder flask, once the property of Napoleon the Great, is now owned by J. W. Bouton of New York. ‘This flask was also taken from the Em: percr Napoleon after his defeat by Welling- ton, and presented by the Iron Duke to Dr. Gilbert of Brighton, wao bequeathed it to Mrs. Charlesley of that city. The flask is a beautiful piece of workmanship and has a medallion of Napoleon on each side in the center. It is 6% inches in height and meas- ures 4% inches in diameter. It weizhs fourteen ounces. The flask is made of pure ivory, with the exception of the :netal spring clasj at the top, which permits the flow of powder. Mr. Boi laces on it of $500. It is in very good condiiion, and its authenticity is unquestionable and can be vouched for. It is possible that the great emperor left the flask in his car- riage, being in haste to escape his enemies, whom he feared would capture him, Holmes’ Famous Home-made FRUIT CAKE, Order your by mail or *phone 1564.
