AFFAIRS IN ALEXANDRIA Friends of Indge Love Rejoice Over His Nominstion by the Legislature, His Majority About Twe to One—At- tempt Made to Hold Upa Farmer—Brevities, Evening Star Bureau, No. 529 King Street, Bell Telephone No. 106. ALEXANDRIA, Va., December 14, 1897. The many friends of Judge James M. Love are rejoicing today over his nomina- tion to succeed himself as judge of Alex- andria and Fairfax counties by the demo- cratic caucus of the Virginia legislature in Richmond last night. Judge Love was placed in nomination by Mr. Joseph E. Willard, delegate from Fairfax county, who made an able speech advocating his favorite. Senator George A. Mushbach of this district championed the cause of Mr. Louis C. Barley, It has all along been expected, and was exclusively predicted in The Star, that Judge Love would receive the nomination, because it was felt that he was the man for the place for more reasons than one, but it was a surprise, in view of the strong fight made, that Mr. Barley’s vote should have been so. small, being less than half of that received by Judge Love. A large number of Alexandrians were in Richmond yesterday to be present when the vote was taken. They returned today, rejoicing over the result. The election will occur within a few days. Attempted Hold-Up. An attempt was made to hold up and rob Edward Pearle, a Fairfax county farmer, about 9 o'clock last night in the rortheastern section of the city. Mr. Pearle was set upon by four negto men, none of whom he was able to describe. He yelled lustily for help and succeeded in scaring the men off. He was found by the police in the market house alley, between Lee street and the Strand, and taken to police headquarters. When searched $100 in money and a handsome gold watch were found on him. No trace has been found of the would-be thieves. Charter Granted. A charter was granted in the corporation court yesterday, Judge J. K. M. Norton presiding, to the Chesapeake and Potomac Stamp Vending and Advertising Company, with a capital stock of $50,000. J. Bishop cf Washington is named as president. Work of Burglars. The dwelling of Mr. Charles Herbert, on South Columbus street near King street, was entered at an early hour yesterday morning by a white robber carrying a dark lantern. He opened many drawers and stole $5 from one of them. Mrs. Her- bert, hearing a noise, rose, and seeing the man just leaving the house fired at him, but it_is not known whether the shot took effect. The City’s Poor. ‘There have been a number of reportg made recently to Overseer of the Poor Shock of the distress of many of the poor of the city. He is investigating the cases and as far as possible relieving the suffer- ing. He says he has many applications from a higher class of people than have heretofore applied for assistance, and that many of the callers are very needy. The charitable organizations are also re- leving many cases of suffering, but they as usual, sadly handicapped by lack upplies, and will gladly receive and of | properly distribute anything that may be sent to them. While the winter has not as yet been a severe one, it is said that a large number of laborers are out of work and need the actual necessities of life. Contributions can be sent to the heads of the various charitable organizations. Service Last Night. At the railroad reading rooms last night there was an interesting service conducted by Mr. Frank H. Caldwell. A large crowd Mr. Caldwell’s address was an instructive one. County Land S: The following transfers of property in Alexandria have been made recently: W. R. Birch to Mary Sherrie, consideration; Mamie E. Taylor to Effie F. Doremus, con- sideration $2,000; Charles C. Wood et ux. to Mamie E. Taylor, consideration $150; Charles C. Wood et ux. to William G.
