Devoe presented an interesting sub- Ject for the consideration of the New York Microscopical Society at its meeting at No. 64 Madison avenue. As the result of long study of beetle habits he brought before the society specimens of the metal-cutting beetles and of their wonderful work. His peper on this iron worker, read by tho secretary of the society, was a brief one which he had already w York Tribune. published. The first metal-cutting beetle w Mr. Devoe became possessed ent to him from Yucatan. He the specimen in a cardboard box. The next mcrning the beetle was found enjoying his ease about the room, and a hole in the side of the box showed the manner of his exit. He was then placed in a glass jar with a black walnut cover. That he out through the next nig He was replaced in the jar, and a metal cover, perforated with a few airholes, was placed over it. The beetle did not begin work on thix cover for about a week, but at the end of that time, within ihe space of forty-eight hours he had cut an opening between two of the holes large enough to get a part of his bedy through. With more time he would have enlarged the opening sufficiently to admit of his escape. Mr. Devoe has had several specimens of the metal-cutting beetle since. They m: ure in length from four and a half to five centimeters, and in breadth from one and a half to two centimeters, Their backs are covered with little knobs, in lines, and their sides with yellowish scales. ‘Their an- tcnnae have from nine to eleven joints They are very slow, deliberate walkei and are chiefly active in the darkness. Mr. Devoe had several specimens op ex- hibition, with samples of their cutting pow- ers. He also exhibited plates representing in magnified form the beetle’s dissected head and jaws ard the jar covers which had been cut. ieee Hygiente Sins in Winter. Dr. Felix Oswald in the Chautauquan, The street cars of several New England cities take in more fares during the three winter months than all the rest of the year taken together. Some of their patrons take a ride only in cold weather; their hearts, like persimmons, get softened by frost. They will walk five miles in mid-summer to save five cents, and defy spring showers in waterproofs, but the dread of “colds, alias catarrhs, persuades them to enter a crowded catarrh trap. The nales of their species often devote the whe winter to indoor indolence, with such intermezzos as a visit to the next-door neighbors or a walk to the tracks of the nearest motor line. And yet they enjoy better appetites in winter than in mid-summer—the season of cutings and vacation tours, of boat races and berry excursions. Every boarding house keepe knows that in warm weather six out of ten guests merely nibble their food, but try to eat a Christmas dinner every wintry day—and that in spite of the fact that many of them pass twenty-three hours of those winter days in an atmos- phere of artificial summer. ‘The explanation can be found in the re- deeming influence of ‘the twenty-fourth hour—the six times ten minutes passed on sireet corners, in markets, post office vest!- bules and wood yards. A few lungs-full of intensely cold fresh afr atone for a multi- tude of hygienic sins, and, unlike the nos- trums of medical confidence men, the rem- edy answers its purpose with or without the confider.ce of the patient. ——_—— ee2— Quite Another Thing. From the Chicago Record “Does your con worry you by contracting debts?” “He doesn't contract debts—he expands them.” Mrs. Darley—“You are so late. You should have been here two hours ago. 1 got so tired waiting for you. Mrs. McBride—“I'm very sorry, deer, but I came as soon as ever I could. You see, Jack gave me his coat to sew a button on this morning, before he went to the office.” Mrs. Darley—“T see! Were the letters so interesting as that?”—Hariem Life,
