Everet: Ha secreta of the has written to The Star as follows. regarding his participation in the affaic: “In his introductory remarks at the mcet- ing of the National Geographic Society last evening and again in a circular sign A. W. Greely, Henry Gannett and V McGee, received in the mail toda Greely so cmphatically stated that ety was ‘in no way, or J. y, General ihe s manne} pe responsible for the lecture here next Thurs- dey evening by Dr. Nansen, either as re- gards announcements to that effect in one of the daily pe or in circulars sent to members of the society, that I feel called upon to state in an equally why said announcemen peared. Briefly, the announcements ina daily yer mentioned the Geographic So- ciety solely through a mistake by paper advertising agent, and I have his written statement to that cffect that it was | through 1.0 fault of mine. The circulars that 1 sent to members of the society were expressly authorized by Gene Greely himself, to whom, as senior Vice president ard acting president, I re- ferred the matter before printing and issu- ing them to members. My letter to him was as follows: ‘In view of the disability of the president of the society, through illness, to consider matters relating to the society at present, I beg to call your at- tention to some matters demanding imme diate attention by the senior vice president. I would ask permission to send out an im- mediate’ notice to members of changes of program, as follows: December 10, Pro- fessor Grosvenor, on “Greece and Turkey” (in place of Miss Peck on “Mexico"); De- cember 17, Dr. Elliott on “East Africa,” in place of Dr. Sternberg on “Yellow Fever” (changed to January 14), and announcement of meetings January 7, 21 and 28. Said circular to include also a coupon allowing members a reduction of 25 cents in prices of tickets to the Nansen lecture, December 16, which I am authorized to make.” “This letter was indorsed ‘O. K., A. W. Grely, vice president,’ by him at his office in War Department, December 6, and I called his attention to it again in my office the same afternoon before the ‘copy’ for the program had been sent to the printer. “If the criticism be made that General Grtely did not then know that I had per- sonally undertaken the local management ~ the lecture, my reply is that it seemed to me fairer to put the proposition before him on its own merits, rather than to try to influence him in the matter by such knowledge. The concession to members of our society was put in the contract by the menagers as a favor requesied by me for the members of the society, as a slight rec- ognition of the handsome reception that we gave Dr. Nansen on the occasion of his first visit to this city, and I am neither ashamed of my part in the matter nor afraid of even greater publicity than that given by General Greely in his announce- ment at the lecture last night and in the circular received today. Dr. Nansen is too big a man to require any cheap adver- tising at the hands of our society, and the National Geographic Society is too big scciety to regard the matter in that light.” —— Trotting at Brightwod. Excise Board Hearing the Complaints Agairst Saloons. The excise board was engaged today in hearing the cases which have been held up because of protests filed against the issu- ance of liquor licenses to the proprietors of the saloons or barrooms involved. In most instances the protests were based on alleged violations of law or because of the alleged disorderly character of the places. Some, it was contended, are too near school houses. In one of these latter cases it was urged on behalf of the saloon keeper that his place was there before the school house was erected, and when asked by the board which ts most desirable, a school house or barroom, the man’s counsel frankly re- marked that the people of the neighbor- hood would prefer the latter. ‘The cases considered by the board today were those of John Sullivan, 1136 ist street; William Morris, 301 G street southwest; Margaret _ FINANCIAL. only one wa\” z ny man or woman working for wages can become “well off,” A 1 it's not through Klonke tetttnit on 1 < by individ r that it's somett every pal Union Savi della Hawaiian Sugar : Co.
