PAGES. THE TIGER’'S FEAST Effect of Tammany’s Victory Already Apparent in New York. TENDERLOIN WILL BE WIDE OPEN Saloon Keepers and Policemen An- ticipate Good Times. PUGILISM MAY BE ALLOWED Special Correspondence of The Eveting Star. NEW YORK, November 13, 1897. In the aftermath of the recent po- litical campaign, in the pictorial de- partment, there appeared a cartoon filled with suggestion. It represent- ed a Tammany tiger, with shoulders drawn with long fasting, but with an abdo- men widely distende. with sudden and hasty feeding. Its leering eyes lighted up a satisfied face and from its mouth dangled the tail feathers of a rooster—the emblem of the Jeffersonion democracy. Strewn around this figure were the mangled re- mains of the emblems of the parties op- posed to Tammany, while on its breast was suspended the star of the straight demo- cratic ticket. Over the figure’s head were printed the words: ‘Bring on the desert.” It is being served now. The political pie is being cut away down in Dixie land, where the prime movers of the recent political victory have followed their leader in search of relfef from an alleged disordered liver. It is strange how one little liver could cause such an cxodus from Tammay Hail. The Change is Feit. Although the men responsible for the change in affairs in this locality are con- spicuous by their absence, the change re- mains; the city feels - it is in the air, and it is a wonderful change. Much has been said about the ‘wide-open’ conditions which would prevail when the reform ad- ministration had been buried under a stack of ballots. While this wide-openness dces not exist in the fullest sense of the word, to all intents and purposes the city feels the change and there is a relaxation of the stringent reform rules apparent every- where. In no place is it so marked as in the old Tenderloin. In that section the habitual seeker for the pleasures of the livlier sort, und-r the anti-Tammany meth- ods, was compelled to take it through the medium of a card of admission to a s0- called club—a blind for a dance hall or something of the kind; or if he wanted to “ease a thirst’’ was compelled to take with his beverage, and pay for, a Raines law sandwich, after regulation hours. True the “club’’ membership gave the so-called member the run of the establishment, and true also that one lonesome, indigestible Raines law sandwich ofttimes did duty for an unlimited num >r of drinks, but there was a semblance of compliance with the jaw—a fear that a slip, a departure tnere- from would be noted in an excise complaint in the morning. Clubs Are Mockeries, The clubs siill exist, but they are mock- eries. The sandwich is used only in very rare spots. An example: Four newspaper men on their way home observed a light in the sear of a saloon which had hitherto been dark and evidently ciosed. A re- mark by one of them that the proprietor was evidently speculating upon some re- laxation in the law, caused the four men to alight from their car just to see how it worked. There was ro trouble in gaining admission at the side door, and seated at a table, an order for liquid refreshments was promptly filled. There was no sandwich. One of the party ventured to ask if that establishment did not serve something to eat with the drinks. Then something broke. The waiter vented his indigna- tion something like this: “Wacher singing about? You've got your licker, aincher? You want to eat, doncher? Dis ain’t no eatin’ house nor lodgin’ house, neider. See?” And as the party emerged from the side door two policemen—reform policemen, for there have been no changes in the force as yet—were standing within a few feet thereof in peaceful disregard of the fact that the law was being violated. When Dr. Parkhurst and his band of reformers started the crusade which grad- vally drove the habitues of the old Ten- derloin from their haunts they took refuge in the upper West Side and formed the nucleus of a new Tenderloin. These old characters are beginning to come back to their old stamping ground and are desert- ing their present quarters for the ex- pected pleasures, when everything will, in fact, be wide open. It is their generally expressed belief that Tammany’s victory means that their good times have com again. : Everybody Welcome. “Silver Dollar” Smith's “club” makes no pretense of issuing membership cards. Everybody is welccme and his place at least is wide open. The notorious “Tom” Gould, who bas a most ursavory reputa- tion as a dive keeper and thug, and who has been unable to open a resort since the killing of his bartender a few years ago, has now opened one of these so-called clubs and the card of membership is used only in very doubtful cases. The Broad- way Garden, another very shady resort, although located on the principal thorough- fare of- the city, is nightly so crowded that there is hardly standing rcom. The law re- quires that all these places shall close from 1 to 5 a.m., but ali the clocks seems to have gone wrong since election. The closing is later and the opening earlier each night, so that the*time the public ts not admitted is reduced to the minimum. Policemen and Saloonkeepers. All through the campaign the privates of the police force were plainly and ynmis- takably for Tammany. They probably re- membered the good old days, when they were alluwed to ievy jell upon the small fry, while their superiors, as charged be- fore Lexow, were bunting bigger gaine. A Tenderioin ‘post’ in those days was sup- posed to mean plenty of extra casi, and there -s now that -same atmosphere sur- roundimg thesofficers on those beats. Madison Square Gardea would not be too large to hold the crowd that would psy a good price to see a fight between first-class heavy weights. Most of the prize fight clubs have been situated in the outskirts of New York and Brook- lyn—at Maspeth, Long Island City, Green- point, Coney Island, etc.—where they would not thrust themselves too conspicu- ously before the church people and others likely to stir up agitation against them. Now, with the coming of a friendly admin- istration, there is no need to hide. The state law is liberal enough to permit a fight for the heavy-weight championship of the world if the police are friendly. ‘The Waldorf Club promises some good events as soon as the bar is lifted. Then there are half a dozen prize fight clubs in the northern part of Manhattan Island. Half the professional pugilists of the United States are dreaming of fat purses in Greater New York after New Year day. LYNCHED THREE MURDERERS. North Dakota Settlers Angered by - the Grant of a New Trial. Alexander Coudot, Indian half-breed:; Paul Holytrack and Philip Ireland, full- biooded Indians, the first of whom was sen- tenced to death for the murder of six mem- bers of the Spicer family last February, and had just been granted a new trial by the supreme court, and the latter two self- confessed accessories in the murder, were taken frora the county jail at Williamsport, N. D., Saturday night and lynched by a meb. The lynching had been apparently coolly planned, and was carried-out with- out a break in the program. The jail in which the prisoners were con- fined is a substantial stone structure, and was in charge of Deputy Sheriff Thomas Kelley. Since the confinement of the pris- oners therein, so great has been the fear building near the jail, and as Kelley was a member, he expected to meet some of the members of the lodge after the meeting had adjourned. To while away the time during the night hours, he was playing sol- itaire in front of-the cells in which the marderers were confined.
