Its Plans for Concerts This Season— We thought Rehearsing the “Messiah.” our business for The Choral Society, one of the oldest and SEPTEMBER most favorably known of the various musical organizations with which this city Was Splendid, is favored, is now hard at work upon the But material for its regular series of concerts. The first concert of the season will be the presentation of Handel’s “Messiah,” ‘Tuesday, December 28, thus keeping up the established practice of the last five years, which practice has also been widely adopt- ed in other cities by similar organizations, of rendering this work during the Christ- mas holidays. There seems to be an es- pecial fitness in the rendition of this mas- terplece of oratorio music at that time. The society hor-3 that a considerably augmented chorus may be secured for its presentation. There is still room for a few more voices, particularly tenors and altos. New members have been taken in at every rehearsal, but the “Messiau” is most ef- fectively presented by a very full chorus and an increased membership is desirable. Rehearsals ‘are held every Monday night from 7:30 to 9:30 o'clock at Sheldon’s Hall, No. 1004 F street northwest, between 10th and 11th streets, and all who desire to join the society should present themselves at any regular rehearsal. No initiation fee is required at present. The work of the society this season, up to the present time, has been confined to a few of the numbers for the second, or “American Composers’ ” concert, but this evening the first rehearsal of the “Messiah” will take place, and all of the remaining rehearsals up to December 28, the date of its rendi- tion, will be devoted to that work; and it would be well for those prospective mem- bers who have been waiting for the “Mes- siah” rehearsals to begin to join the so- ciety next Monday night if possible, or if not at the earliest possible date thereafter. The names of the soloists who have been engaged for the “Messiah” concert, coupled with the fine chorus work for which this society is so famous, insure a production of this oratorio which will not be inferior to that given in any other city this year. The soloists will be as toliows: Mme. de Diaz-All |. soprano; Miss Fielding Roselle, contralto; Mr. _—— C. E@ort in Behalf of © Association’s Proposed New Home—Should Be Attractive. A letter has been prepared by the man+ agers of the Young Men's Christian Asso- ciation of this city addressed to the Chris- tian men and women of the city of Wash- ington. The world's committee of the Y. M. C. A., composed of representatives of all evangelical denominations, calls upon the Christian people to set aside November 14 to 20 as a week of prayer for young men and for the institution whose mission it is to work for them. To this end the committee asks the Chris- tian people of the city to make this week a season for special prayer for the young men, and that the Master may richly bless the effort made to secure a new building. ahere are in our city peculiar tempta- tions,” it? is stated, “which come with double force to the vast numbers of young men who come to the national capital from. country districts, To Elevate and Educate. “We believe that the Christian church of this city should make the one institution whose doors stand ever open to the stranger, as well as the resident young man, so sorely beset with temptations, and under which so many fall, a place so beau- tifully and completely furnished that eve! ry young man may find within its walls every- thing he shall need or desire to make the association a home that shall refine, ele- vate, educate and point him to the Master. “An active Christian Association is a gain to the church; its doors are open during the hours the doors of the church are closed, and it stands -ever *pointiug young men to the church. The Christian workers developed within the association stand pamong the foremost in the active work of the church. “A Young Men's Christian Assoctation building for the 40,000 young men of our city can be secured if we have the co-opera- tion of the public generally. “We have few wealthy citizens who feel the responsibility of seeing that such an institution is esteblished, as in some other places, and it is earnestly hoped that every member of the church will feel a responsi- bility, both in prayer and effort, for this great movement. “To this end, again we ask the Christian people of the city to make November 14 to 20 a sedson for special prayer for the young men, an] that the Master may richly biess the effort made to secure a new building.” List of the Signers. The letter is signed by the following: Charlies E. Foster, S. W. Woodward, J. B. Larner, J. H. Lichiiter, L. Cabell William- son, B. H. Warner, G. W. F. Swartzell, A. M. Lothrop, W. H. H. Smith, T. A. Stier. A Pawe has been gotten out by the Y. M. C. A., stating that 40,000 men in this city need @ new Y. M. C. A. building, and asking for funds to erect it. The ¥. M. C. A. is now housed in part of the ruins left by fire. The land, costing $35,000 in 1882, is now worth $94,000. Twenty feet additional front has been bought. The sum of $125,000 will construct a new building, six stories and basement, which will furnish all fa- cilities for attracting the young men. For the 40,000 young men of this city a home will be provided, with all the pleas- ures of one’s own fireside, good compan- ions, good books and papers, cheerful par- lors and game room, swimming and shower baths, gymnasium, bowling alley and bi- cycle stable. entertainments, lectures, lt- erary and other societies, a business col- lege with every facility for education at a nominal price, and a hundred other ad- vantages under Christian influences, which would establish and hold to their moral course theusands of young men. W. B. Miller, secretary of the interna- tional committee of the Y. M. C. A., will be here during the week. Services will be conducted piehtly, beginning at 8 o'clock, at the Y. M. A. building. ne HORACE WHITE’S VIEWS. His Replies to Quest Monetary Co: ission. The monetary commission has ‘received from Mr. Horace White answers to the in- terrogatories addressed by the commission to financiers and others throughout the ccuntry. In answer to the questions re- garding the maintenance of the gold stand- ard, Mr. White says: “I would recommend the redemption, re- tirement and cancellation of all legal ten- der notes as a first step. Probably the sil- ver certificates and silver dollars would thereafter remain. at par with gold, like the outstanding thalers cf Germany, and would not be presented for redemption in any considerable amount, being needed, like the smaller silver coins, for circulation in retail trade. After the retirement of the legal tender notes we should be able to see better what to do next.” Mr. White thinke that for the purpose of facilitating the use of existing silver cur- rency, the smallest denomination of United States notes to be put in circulation should be ten dollars at first; but this should be made a matter of experiment, the object being to determine the dimensions of the field of circulation which will absorb the silver currency, leaving the rest to bank notes. In regard to the legal tender notes, Mr. White favors the gradua) but entire with- Grawal of the treasury notes of 1890, and of the United States notes, on the ground that there is no certainty, and can be no certainty, that the government will always redeem them in gold. Redemption or non- redemption is a political issue to be fought over in elections, and must remain so as long as this kind of paper is outstanding. Mere uncertainty is always a drawback to business prosperity. Failure of redemption would be bankruptcy, public and private. Mr. White believes that in process of time it will not be possible to rely upon national bonds as security for bank note issues, because of the extinction of the Public debt. In reply to the question whether any safe and practicable plan can be devised for using other securities, he says that he thinks not. He believes that 50 per cent of the paid-up and unimpair- ed capital of the bank should be the limit of the note issues and that a cash reserve should be held for the redemption of notes, “the same as now provided by law for de- posits, viz.: 25 per cent in ‘reserve cities’ end 15 per cent elsewhere, with the right te keep three-fifths of said 15 per cent & the reserve cities. There is no difference by the ef the bank or in a clearing house deposi- tory. “In general, I approve of = plan adopt- Debating Club's Dinner.
