The sever.ty-eighth annual convention of the Evangelical Lutheran synod of Mary- land will be held in this city on the 12th of October next. The sessions are to be held in the Church of the Reformation, corner 2d street and Pennsylvania avenue southeast, of which the Rev. W. E. Parson, D.D., is the pastor. The synod comes to this city as guests and are to be entertained by the Luther- ans of Washington. Each congregation, and there are eight in number, will be expected to entertain or provide for their entertainment as far as able. It is under- stood that the three principal churches, St. Paul's, Memorial and the Church of the Reformation, will each take care of one-fourth of the delegation, and the other fourth will be cared for by the other smaller congregaticns. Rev. C. S. Trump. Eight of the Lutheran churches, out of a ttal of fcurteen, in this city, belong to the Maryland syncd. They are as fol- lows: St. Paul's, Rev. S. Domer, D.D., pastor; Memorial, Rev. J. G. Butler, D.D.; church of the Reformation, Rev. W. E Parson, D.D.; West_Washington, Rev. 8. Billheimer; Zion's, Rey. A. Homrighaus; Keller Memcrial, Rev. C. H. Butler; Church of the Redeemer, Rev. D. E. Wiseman, and St. Mark's, Rev. John C. Bowers. ‘The present officers uf the synod are: President, Rev. C, S. Trump of Martins- burg, W. Va., elected last year at Cumber- land, Md; secretary, Rey. V.ctor Miller of Leitersburg, Md., who has held the office since October 6, 1880, when the synod met at We:tminster, Md., and treasurer, Mr. W. H. Janes of Baltimore, Md., who nas served in that capacity since October 5, 1 when the synod met in Mariinsburs, W. Va., where the present president is now located. The synod will convene wt 2 p.m. Octeber 12, and will continue in session possibly three or four days. Heretofore t nod has met on Thurs- day and remained in session over Sunday, but this time the change was made to ‘Tuesday, in order to enable the pastors to get back to their different charges for Sunday. Owing to this fact, there will necessarily have to be a change in the order of business. The president will preach the synodical sermon and make his report Tuesday af‘ctnoon, after which the election of officers for the ensuing year on this occasion will be Ordination sermcn, Rev. Hasskarl of Frederick, Md. If, for any reason, the above named cannot render this service, the following alternates will take their places in the orier named: Revs. P. H. Henninghausen, D. F. Garland, J. U. Asper, Robert L. Patterson and G. A. Royer. This is what might be termed an “off year” in the meeting of this synod. More interest is taken wnen it becomes necessary to elect delegates to the general synod, which meets every two years, a3 this was done last year at Cumberland, and the general synod having met in Mansfield, Ohio, in June last, it will be another year before this part of the program can be duplicated. There will, however, be some elections to fill vacancies on committees, of those The speakers as follows: Rev. W. E. Parson. whose terms expire. at this session. They are as follows: One director for the Theo- logical Seminary at Gettysburg, two trus- tees for the Tressler Orphans’ Home, the entire education committee, the adviscry board of home missions and the apportion- ment cummittee. ‘The synod of Maryland is the oldest of the synods belonging to the general synod, having keen organized in Winchester, Va., a8 Ul ward of seventy-three pastorates, ninety- eight ministers end 23,000 communicant members, and numerically is the second largest of the general body. There will probably be in attendance at this session the number of ministers as above, and should ke as many lay delegates. The re- port of the treasurer last year showed re- ceipts amounting to $18,930.70, an increase over the preceding year of $852.27. amount $1,958.53 was contributed for ben- eficiary education, $4,178.19 for home mis- sicns, $3,154.14 for church extension ani $8,552.16 for foreign missions. To the dea- coness cause $462.62 was contributed, and to the Home for the Aged, located in the District, $556.36. In this time the member- ship increased about 1,000. ‘The estimated value of church property was $1,406,417, with an indéebtedness of $110,126.28.
