The shine and sparkle of heavy plate mirrors, the flashing of many-colored elec- tric lights and the handsome and tasteful ficral and other decorative effects made the opening this morning of the Chas. Schneider Baking Co.’s stands one of the most successful ever occurring in Center market. Crowds all morning long, and up to the time of this going to press, flocked around and admired the superb display of fine Bread, Rolls, Cakes and the dif- ferent specialties this company has long been famous for. To all who came a beau- tiful souvenir was presented. These stands are located just inside the 7th street en- trance doors. The company proved by the lavish decorations and the way in which no expense was spared that they never do things by halves. The stands wil remain open iill late this evening, and the readers of this yaper are urged to call and secure one of their beautiful souyenirs free. wn Coal—See Jno. [REAL ESTATE GOSSIP| Business in the Building Line Ex- ceptionally Dull. NUMEROUS NEW BLOCKS IN PROSPECT Architects Structures in Contemplation. Preparing Plans for ELECTRIC POWER HOUSE —_+——— Prominent real estate men of this city say that while the past week has been ex- ceptionally dull in real estate transactions, seme big deals may be expected within the rext few days. In buildir.g circles there has been but lit- tle contracted for, and, although the archi- tects generally are busy preparing plans for structures in contemplation, builders and those who furnish suppiies say they have scarcely ever before known business to be so quiet at this time of the year. There are, however, evidences of a re- vival, among which are that many large manufacturers of building materials have received invitations to bid for the construc- tion of numerous blocks of houses in vari- ous parts of the city. Up to yesterday only about thirty per- mits of all kinds had been issued this month by the building inspector, and most of these were for repairing, while the ag- gregate value reached only about $12,000. Mr. Michael Esch hag contracted for the erection of a two-story and cellar brick store and dwelling at No. 1400 1st. street northeast. The dimensions will be 20 by 46, front of pressed brick, with square bay window, tin and slate roof, Latrobe heat, square show windows, electric bells, speak- ing tubes, ete, and all modern conveni- ences. The cost will be about $3,000. Bids- for Power House. The bidders have put in their estimates for the eréction of the new superstructure of the new power house of the United States Electric Lighting Company, but none of them will, it is understood, receive the contract because the figures are too high, in the judgment of the directors of the company. The several proposals were: R. H. Hood, Duehay, $121,034; Henry F. Getz, 497; Frank L.’Hanvey, $113,700. It is understood that new plans will be prepared and new bids called for. Messrs. B. H. Warner & Co. state that many inquiries are being made in reference to the purchase of houses of the better class by persons who intend to make Wash- ington their permanent home. Some sales have already been made by the firm and in this respect the trade this fall thus far has been better than during the three years past. There is a marked disposition on the part of many people who are now living in flats to remove into separate houses, while some who are now householders are removing into flats. There are fewer desirable va- cant houses than for several seasons past, and the number {s gradually growing less.
