Sete ronan “HE KILL ME TONIGHT” A Band of Armenians Held as Prisoners in Virginia. Amazing Antics of a Mountain Hotel Keeper Who W Inspector Hollinberger, chief of the local Getective bureau, yesterday received a long letter from G. Caprelian of 250 W. 224 | street, New York city, an employe of Drummond's detective agency, setting forth the details of the alleged luring to and confinement of a party of Armenian ref gees, near Buckton, Va. In reply In- spector Hollinberger advised Caprelian to communicate with the sheriff of Warrea county, Va., explaining that the latter would undoubtedly supply the necessary information as to the proper manner to proceed toward securing the release of the men supposed to be prisoners. According to the story, in response to a request from Charles Cullen & Son, who represented themselves as the proprietors of the Warren White Sulphur Springs, io- cated at Buckton, a party of ten Arme- nians, lately arrived at New York, last fall were sent to the Cullens. The junior member of the firm, Orlan Ciyde Cullen, is particularly well known in this city, having figured quite prominently and somewhat sensationally in the famous Holt will case. In the present instance it is understood that Clyde Cullen was en- gaged in an effort to organize a regiment of soldiers to fight for the cause of Cuba. in his letter to Inspector Hollinberger Mr Caprelian stated that so far as he could learn, the establishment of the Cullens was not a hotel, as represented. It is a house on top of a mountain, and surround- ed by forests, wrote Mr. Caprelian, and he ccntinued: “Now, called hotel are an old man and a younger man, and a wo- man about forty-five years old, and about six Armenians. There were ten, but six €s- ped from the place, and two more were ded to the number by the arrival of H. Caprclian and M. Arakian. The place itself is a regular arsenal, containing rifies, re- dynamite, powder, and other im- plements of war. There is a turret or cu- pcla on the house, where the younger Cul- len keeps a lookout, and if any person should be seen, no matter how distant, he harges firearms, and orders the Ar- mentans to do likewise.”" Continuing, Mr. Caprelian sad to have sion and that their provisions seem to be supplied by people who are in their confidence. One of the refugees in question Is a brother of Mr. Cap 5 and in a letter Le complained that he had accidentally been shot in the head. The Cullens, so it is claimed, agreed to pay the Armenians $10 a month each, and they have been employed chcpping trees in the forest anc building a: high fence surround- ing the hotel. that the rger has learned that in Washington trom March 16 He stopped at a leading hotel and ran up a bill of nearly $100, so | it was discovered, and failed to pay ‘the same. The®prin al items In the bill were es one of the men “who are reported as having escaped from the Cullens is locked up at the first pre- to await examination this the police surgeons to deter- mine his sanity. The unfortunte man has been stopping recently with B. G. Cas- barian, at 1414 F street. He was taken sick Friday last and removed to Providence Hospital. There he developed symptoms of insanity, and was removed to the sta- tion house. Aulagian constantly mutters, “He kill me tonight.” MUSIC IN THE BIB Dr. Cyrax Adler's Lectures f delphia on Musical Dr. Cyrus Adler of the Smithsonian Insti- tution lectured in Philadelphia at the Mickve Israel Synagogue last evening, under the auspices of the Mickve Israel Congregation, on ‘The Musical Instruments of the Bible and Their Modern Representa- tives.” The lecture was Mlustrated with a number of stereopticon pictures of ancieat musical instruments as shown in statues and bas relief and their prototypes of the present day. The different musical instru- ments of the Bible were described in detail by Dr. Adler, under the following three classes: Instruments of percussion, wind instruments and string instruments. The only musical instrument used among the ancient Israelites of which we have a con- temporary representation is the long trumpet preserved in the arch of Titus in Rome. This resembles the modern “n’feer™ of the Moors. The only insirument used in ancient times which is still in use is the “shofor,” or ram's horn, blown in the syna- Sogues on the Jewish New Year day and the Day of Atonement. Other ancient in- struments which have their representations in modern forms are the tabret or band drum, cymbals, the flute cr pipe, the double flute, the bagpipe, the harp, the psaltry or dulcimer, Various instruments not cer- tainly identified, mentioned in the Bible, are evidently instruments intended to accom- pany particular Psalms, and these are named according to the instruments which were used in the accompaniment to their rhythmic rendering. ——— Wimodaughsis Course of Studies. A course of studies for spring ard sum- mer classes has been arranged by the Wi- modaughsis, which will begin on April 1. There will be a field class in geology and mineralogy Saturdays after 4 p.m., Prof. Geo. P. Merrill of Columbian University having charge of the lectures. Telegraphy will be studied on Mondays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., under the lead- ership of Mr. George H. Mcdonald. My- thology will be explained by Miss Rosina E. Hayt. The statuary and allegorical rep- resentations in the new Congressional Li- brary will be one of the themes upon which se Hayt will talk on Friday afternoons o'clock. Embroidery and lace work will occupy the attentioa of those under the instruction of Mrs. M. D. Densmore for two hours on Fridays, beginning at 1 o'clock. Among the attractions for the next three months will be talks on “Four Periods of Literature,” by Mrs. Eva Whit- comb Olney, on Monday cvenirgs at 7.30 o'clock. Phula- instruments. i Can’t Take Part in the Campaign. Secretary Gage has informed General McNulty and other prominent politicians of Chicago that he cannot take any part in the pending municipal campaign. He was requested to write a letter in the interest of the candidacy of Judge Sears, as mayor, but he declinéd to do so on the ground that it would not be proper. —-o—_____ To Dock the Iowa. With the consent of the contractor who built the new dry dock at ‘Brooklyn, the battle ship Iowa will b3 docked there next Wedn y. The ship will leave Cramps’ works at Philadelphia today, and as soon as she is docked the official trial will take place. —— To Be a2 Railroad President. A report which receives credence here is that ex-Secretary Lamont 1s slated for the presidency of the Northern Pacific raitroad, with a view to closer relationship between the Great Northern and the Northern Pa- cific lines. ————__ eo +____. you want anything, try an ad. in The sia it anybody has what you wish, you will get an answer. ———>__ Russian Prisoner.
