Mr. McKinley and Most of His Cabinet Were Present — Some Novel Features. The dinner of the Gridiron Club at the Arlington Saturday night was one of the most delightful in the history of the club. Although not the club's annual dinner, it fairly rivaled that famous institution in the elegance of the decorations, the amus- ing features of the entertainment and the number and prominence of the guests. It was the first dinner since the new ad- ministration came into power, and the oc- casion was made memorable by the pres- ence of President McKinley and five mem- bers of his cabinet. Vice President Hobart was to have attended, but he was pre- vented by an important business engage- ment in New Jersey. Besides these ‘here were a number of senators and representa- tives, and the army and navy and the dip- lomatic corps were well represented. All the features of the entertainment were as unique as they were elaborate, from the menus to the initiation of Messrs. Raymond Patterson, J. Harry Cunningham and Alex. Mosher, as the historian, artist and musician, respectively. The Dingley tariff bill was very much in evidence at one time. When it was carried from the room there was the sound of breaking glass and crockery, and when it came back, presumably from the Senate, it was a badly torn and tattered rag. Mr. S. E. Johnson, the president of the club, as usual made a charming host, and later _in the evening resigned the gavel to Mr. Frank Hosford, who was made up as Napoleon. The resemblance was really re- markable, and the guests were not slow to see the point of the joke. Mr. Hosford was a capital master of the sports, and under his leadership things fairly hummed. A number of the guests were called upon for speeches and responded in just the proper spirit. Among those who contributed their share to the evening’s enjoyment in this way were: Senator Hanna, Speaker Reed, Charles Emory Smith, ex-minister to Russia and editor of the Philadelphia Press; Secretary Gage, Attorney General McKenna, Senator Allison, Representatives Dalzell and Brom- well, Rey. Frank Sewell, Controller Eckels Baron von Thielman, the German ambassa- dor; Senor Mendonca, the Brazilian minis- ter, and Senator Carter. Mr. E. B. Hay also contributed to the enjoyment of the Celightful evening with several songs and recitations. The Gridiron Quartet rendered a number of enjoyable selections. The guests of the evening were as fol- lows: The President, Dr. S. S. Adams, Sen- ator Aldrich, RK. C. Alexander, New York; the Secretary of War, Senator Allison, R. E. Annin, New York; Representative Clif- ton B. Beach, Ohio; Dr. Edward Bedloe, Philadelphia: James Boyle, Ohio; Charles A. Boynton, Major Fred Brackett, Repre- sentative Bromwell of Ohio, Samuel M. With the full approval of nearly all good citizens prize fighting itself 1s prohibited in every state in the Union except one. The chief business of the legislature of that state seems to have been to create a “sports- man’s paradise.” Nobody expected any- thing better of Nevada. Her star in the galaxy of states has been steadily waning for years. But a prize fight is one thing and a picture of it is quite another thing. r asks this question: “If pictures ze fights may be exhibited why not pictures of cock fights, dog fights, bull fights and so forth?” Please allow me to state that such pictures are exhibited, and in first-class places, too. In the Corcoran Art Gallery there I¢ a picture of a bloody bull fight, and it attracts a great deal of at- tention. It 1s a work of art, and I imagine that objections to it would receive very little attention. Kinetoscopic pictures are not works of art of the same kind, but they are artistic and very interesting ‘scientific studies. Pic- tures of duels, murders and other crimes have never been considered immoral. In- stead of having a demoralizing influence they inspire horror and disgust. The whole question as to these pictures seems to be one of good taste rather than morals. THOMAS W. GILMER. ae ona Boards, 12-in., le. per foot. Saturday night between 11 and 12 o'clock Father Spencer, who was in his room on the second floor of the rectory, heard the noise made by the stane coming in contact with the glass, and, looking out the window, he saw two young men re- treating. It is not suspected by the police that there was any attempt at robvery. ‘The window had been put in the church by Capt. Harry Johnson, who is a member of the excise board, and the police think the window smashing was done because of some grievance against him. One police- man said he thought that some one whose license had been rejected was probably re- sponsible for the affair. Father Spencer cannot identify the young men, who he thinks were not more than twenty years old. Libbey & Co. Labor Union and Building Trades Council. —_> Boards, 12-in., 1c. per foot. 6th & N.Y.av.
