There is no set distance, and hence no general answer be given. All women are not alike. me can stand fatigue, while others can- The least exertion will tire some wo- men, while others can withstand a good deal. This is evidenced in all of the walks of life, and applies equally as well to bi- cycling. Some women take a natural de- to the wheel, and can push the pedals for some miles without getting tired, while there are plenty of others who cannot and over one o= two miles of contiauous g. It on this account that each hould be the best judge of her capa- and fully know when she has traveled far enough. Washington has one member of the fair sex who has succeeded in covering a cen- tury within the allotted time of tourteen hours. She is one out of many. and an ex- pert rider. A man can ‘and more riding than a woman, endurance being a component part of his construction, as a general ruie. ff out on a long ride ircquentiy, es- pecially when climbing a steep hill. A stop of five or ten minutes will do an immense amount of goed and help ward off the fa- tigue that inevitably comes from lung: rid- ing to one inexperienced. The riding abilities can be gradually en- jarged with continual riding. Never at- tempt a long journey unless you have had @ good deal of experience in riding. It is isable to make short trips frequently, eradually extending the length, addi or three miles each time, and In # the muscles wil become 2ccustome use of the bicycle, and the rier surprised to find the large distance she can travel on the machine. when this state is reached it is unwise te make too large a jump, and impose t th: powers of endurance, whiea are apt to fail in an emergency of the kind. Baltimore has a club of 250 women mem- hers, who have signed a pledge to wear short skirts, clearing the ground at least three inches, on rainy days. The efforts to form similar clubs in other cities will be impeded by the fact that only the young and slender look well in short skirts. The Baltimore short skirt, which made its ap- pearance a few weeks ago, hasn't much consideration for the stout and the elderly women. It will probably not be long be- fore a similar agitation will be made in this city. It seems as though all of the re- forms in the feminine dress have a xen- eral tendency toward a rational costume, which, instead of being reached by a direct route usage will gradually come int> general Speaking of women clubs reminds the writer of the fact that with all of the fe- male cyclists in the city, there is not a sin- gle girls’ cycle club in the District. More than this, there is no club that has any fe- male auxiliary. This to be regretted. There is probably no city in the country that has so large a percentage of femule riders as Washington, and the absene> of a club of some sort is conspicuous. The organization of one, and its succeasful mun- a would refute many unkind re- mar! hat have been made on the subject. The male cyclists are generally selfish in one respect, and they look with disdain any female cycling organization. club by themselves or in a with men will never succeed. The ng and dissension will soon break organization,” said a well-known n to The Star cycle reporter. His prediction seems to have been verified in many instances. There was until recently a girls’ club in Chicago, which started off with a big blaze of giory, but which sud- nly came to a full stop, and from the st accounts the matter had veen brought into court to see which members were en- titled to the powder box, the curling irons and other feminine articles. Several years 0, when the number of female riders was tim: ited, there was a very successful club in existence, known as the Nomads, which jasted for some time, but which gradually dropped out of existence. It would seem us though some of the riders of thé fair sex should get up a club of thair own, for the general good that would accrue. Lillian Russell, who has been singing this week at the Columbia Theater, is an en- thusiastic wheelwoman. Sne has several bicycles that have been presented to her, and a daily spin is one of the regular oc- currences on favorable days. She hus given out a number of interviews on. the subject, und expressed her unbounded admiration for the use of the silent-steed for ihe fair sex, which, she claims, like a good many others, emancipates women. Lottie Gilson is another ardent cyclist. Camille D'Arville, who has appeared in this city a nun:ber of times, is also an enthu- siastic rider. Allaline ‘Terriss, who tormer- ly played in “His Exceller has been riding for four y the wheel in preference her horse running away one cime and giving her such a scare that she was always afraid thereafter to drive. She says that she rides about an hour and.a half at a time, being as long as she can comfortably stand. pug It is a ludicrous sight to see a female rider towed along when a novice is doing the hard work. Especially is this so when one sees the sight for the first time. The writer saw the tow line tn practical opera- tion :ast fall out on the Coaduit road for the first time. The day was quite windr. A strong breeze was coming almost due north, that raised the dust in -louds and caused tears in the eyes of all those faced it. Riding mp the road was much harder than the return trip. as the wind was struck more squazely. ‘The wind was tinged with enough cold to make it disa- greeable. While staicing at a wayside re- sort a man was seen slowly pushing his wheel, and later it developed that a woman was perhaps twenty feet behind him. A repe drown taut was fastened from the man’s saddie post to the head of the wo- man’s wheel, and -vaile the man was puf- fing and blowing like 4 small-sized porpoise, the woman was taking things easy, nav- ing her feet on tne cuxsiing bars, only keeping the whee! straight. Eehind the two came another young man with a Ifttle girl in tow ir: a similar manner, the party evidently being one family:out for pieasure bent. It might have been pleasure for the women folks, but from all indications it was anything else but that for the men. ‘The towing process might come in gocd in the case where a young lady becomes too tired or sick while riding, but it appears to be much harder work than pushing a tandem for the man. Female racing is yet in !ts infancy in this country, and there are many females who hope that it will never be encouraged to such an extent as to become popular. It is all right and proper, they think, for the men to race, and perform record-break- ing feats, but it is something entircly out- side of woman's sphere. So far there have only been a limited number of female cycling races held in this country, the most prominent being a recent six-day go-as-you- please race. The venture did-not prove as successful as was expected, and, in fact, the managers lost money. The League of American Wheeimen ts opposed to female racing contests, and will not issue a z¢nc- tion for them. It goes still farther and threatens to suspend any male riders who compete on a track where there are female riders. This somewhat strengthens the cause of those opposed to women racing, as the league ts the power of cycle racing in this respect. The matter has not yet been permanently decided, nor is it likely that such will be the case, and from now cu the pros and cons of the question will be dis- cussed. —_——— HIGH WATER IN THE SOUTHWEST.
