Hall of the 13th infantry, stationed at Fort Niagara, N. Y., recently became Involved in seme scanda- levs proceedings near his post, and in or- der, it is said, to avoid being court-mar- ualed and dismissed in disgrace, he has been allowed to resign his commission. This officer was appointed to the West Point Military Academy from Indiana in July, 1872, and was regularly graduated four years later, since which time he has been promoted a first lieutenant of infan- try. His friends are charitable enough to believe that he was not altogether respon- sible, mentally, for his alleged misdeeds. tgp ee The Vacant Annapolis Professorship. Lieut. T. C. Fenton cf the navy, it is said, has been recommended by Secretary Her- bert for appointment to the vacancy in the grade of professors at the Naval Academy, caused by the retirement last year of Prof. Prud'homme, for many years at the head of the department of foreign languages. It has been urged against him, however, that he is ineligible because of his unfamiliarity with the Spanish language. ae Bolted the Populist Cauc Twenty Pritchard populists walked out of the populist caucus at Raleigh, N. C., last night, which practically gives the fight to Pritchard. It is thought that the Butler forces are now trying to make a truce. “ APENTA” THE BEST NATURAL APERIENT WATER. ttt UJ HUNYADI SPRINGS, Buda Pest, Hungary. “Gentle, but satisfactory in its action. CONDENSED LOCALS ‘The board walk at North Carolina avenue and 13th street is reported in a dangerous condition, and the police have asked that it be repaired. A big-scale carp weighing thirty pounds was caught in the canal near the Chain bridge yesterd The fish was sold in Georgetown for cents. There is a leaky fire plug at the northeast corner of Ist and B streets northeast. Be- ing so near the Capitol’ and New Library pee the repairs will be made without elay. Police Lieut. Heffner reported to head- quarters today dangerous holes in front of 320, and 328 C street northeast, as well as in front of 2% and 228 E street in the same section. : Last night about 7 o'clock an alarm of fire was turned in from box 134 for fire in the umbrella store of Frank Jaeger, No. D3 llth street northwest. What caused the fire is not known. The damage amounted to $75. Shepherd Barrett, an elderly man, who lived at 2460 8th street northwest, died suddenly about 10 o'clock this morning. Dr. Gaines was called to the house when the patient was taken sick, but when he reached the house his services were not needed. Coroner Hammett will have to ive a certificate of death.- Seven robberies were reported to the po- lice at headquarters today. Several over- coats, some underwear, a bicycle lamp and other things not very valuable were among the articles reported stolen. Hack Inspector Groff is making extensive preparations for handling the large number of vehicles that will be about the pension building on the occasion of the inaugural ball. It is thought that the plans adopted four years ago will be followed this time. There was no trouble with the vehicles four years ago, so the hack inspector says, and none is anticipated this time. It is likely that Congress will provide for the employment of special policemen end detectives to assist the local police force in handling the crowds during the inaugural Proceedings. Four years ago 400 special Policemen were appointed for ten days. This year an effort may be made to in- crease this number. A number of names of those who want to do this extra duty have been registered at the police stations. —— Transfers of Real Estate. Canal street between H and I streets—Michael J.
